It tells you more about lack of emerging talent in Aussie ODI camp. After Smith not many batters are claiming his number 3 position, Marnus was supposed to replace him as he was doing exceptionally well in test cricket but he also lost form in red ball and it's showing in ODI as well.
Big question is who can replace Marnus on number 3?
Lack of young batting talent should be a concern for Australia. I watched their U-19 team during the world cup in 2024. They had some terrific young pace bowlers, such as Callum Vidler, Mahli Beardman and Tom Straker, but the only batsman who got my attention was Sam Konstas (who is out of form right now). The Sheffield Shield is widely regarded as the best domestic competition in the world, but there also you will find hardly any batsmen in their teens, or even early 20s.
Their u-19 setup used to be heavyweight and there was a time when many players used to graduate from this very setup to seniors but that's not the case anymore and majority of young talent get lost.
Nowadays they have their own version of green mamba or simply flat ones and no inbetween competitive decks in Sheffield maybe that's why batters are running out of carrots early in their professional career.
