Which move could be riskier; trusting yourself or financial institutions?
Without any offense, if you need to ask this question, then perhaps bitcoin isn't for you.
I agree with you to some extent only. If we are this strict, we are going to exclude probably most of the population of the world. People are not even able to safely control their basic online accounts. How could we demand from them to be able to safely store Bitcoin? Don't get me wrong, educating and transforming individuals is great. Each person that is taught how to properly secure their keys is a massive victory, but I would not demand it.
It's all good if you invest in the traditional way (stock, bonds, deposits, options etc.), but Bitcoin was invented to make us think differently, not to incorporate a new asset in the traditional system.
Bitcoin is neutral though, so if someone wants to use it in a particular way it is their choice. Even if you want to use it completely wrongly, Bitcoin gives you a choice. I think that was the real purpose, not actually forcing you to use it in self sovereignty mode.
