Like they say, if you don't play the lottery you can't win..and using this mentality it's worth giving these games a shot as you can never know what happens.

Exactly. This is the reason why it's called gambling, because a win is not a guarantee. Though the chances of losing are greater than winning. As long as everything is in moderation and in control, there is nothing to worry about losing.
The lottery is the perfect example of this. People knew that their chances of hitting the jackpot were less than 1%, but still, they were willing to give it a shot.

The jackpot lottery is different that people play it, it does not cost them time at all they just buy a 1 dollar ticket or a couple of them and they wait when the lottery run in TV usually by weekend for half an hour or one hour max. They know their chances are less than 0.000x% and they still play for the simple reason that as I said it does not cost a lot of money and a lot of time. These people though who only play this type of gambling are not considered real gamblers, they play once a week only and don't spend more than 5 dollars in total per week. The true gamblers are the ones who play everyday and those unfortunately are having, most of them a worse way of life than the people only playing lottery so I would say it is very good to calculate chances before taking any decision.
