What really makes a gambler lose? Is it greed? Well it is the illusion of control. Illusion of control leads to continued gambling and the more a gambler plays the more the casinos win, right? As a gambler, you should be able to identify these illusions so you can at least get a hold of yourself.
I think every gamblers loose, the emphasis should be on terrible losses which is a product of unchecked engagement on the casino. The casino games is designed to give the casino more edge, but some people actually win more than the casino initially, but the illusion of control sees them get overconfident and loose back everything and even more to the casino on the long run. It is important to have a budget, you cannot always trust yourself to control the situation, but you can control yourself from redepositing into the casino when you have exhausted your budget which you deposited into the casino at the inception of your gambling session.

We often think, deep down, that we can control how we win. No matter how many proof we are presented with that the casino always wins we always think that we can overthrow this theory that applies to everyone. Then it gets justified when we actually win so we will continue playing thinking we can actually decide when to win.

If you get statistical and logical, you will remove these thoughts and you will not become overconfident or superstitious.
You cannot control how you win, it is always a 50 50 chance, you can only help yourself retain your win by withdrawing from the casino after a good win so you can both control the illusion that you can keep winning more and more and avoid the chances of loosing everything back due to your overconfidence.
