In my country, it is pretty common for parents to have kids then think that their kids are their hope. That is because they get kids without being financially ready for it yet and then they just eventually hope that when their kids grow up they will be the ones to build wealth for them.

It was an olden days pattern whereby you discover that parents are giving births to children for the purpose of helping them to their farm works instead of relying on other slaves or strangers that they may employ to farm for them, this was an olden days mentality as I've said, but today, parents don't leave by all these, even those in the remote areas have been suffering to ensure that their children had a better future and never take them for granted by engaging them into hard labour.

But is having kids the reason why people end up financially worse over the years?

No, the parent can choose to have a single child and yet complained a lot about the demands in raising that single child up, we are the ones that should be up in our game by working hard so that our children may not meet any of these as a continuous challenge for them.
