Re: What if a major CBDC launches successfully? A boost or death blow for crypto?

Central banks around the world are testing digital currencies (CBDCs), and some are closer than ever to a full rollout. On paper, CBDCs promise speed, lower costs, and government-backed trust.  Cool

But the big question is: how would this affect crypto?

Could CBDCs actually drive adoption by making people more comfortable with digital money in general?

Or would they crowd out decentralised alternatives by offering blockchain-flavoured fiat that feels safer for the average person?

There is also the surveillance angle with CBDCs, which we all know every transaction could be tracked with that. Would that push more people towards crypto for privacy, or scare them off entirely?

Come to think of it: If the EU, US, or China launches a CBDC at scale, does it boost crypto adoption or spell trouble for decentralisation?  Huh

I am just being curious, so over to you OGs. Thanks for your inputs in advance.

Hasn't this been discussed before? CBDCs will never pose a direct threat against crypto. It will just be another iteration of Fiat currencies (Fiat 2.0). With banks growing bigger and stronger than ever, you can bet the launch will be a successful one. Now, it's up to debate whenever governments will push through the adoption of CBDCs or simply go along with existing solutions (eg: stablecoins). Perhaps, the plan is to use stablecoins as the "de-facto" replacement of traditional Fiat currencies. No need to re-invent the wheel by creating a CBDC from scratch.

In the US, Trump and his Republican base have proposed the elimination of a US Central Bank Digital Currency (Anti-CBDC Surveillance Act), while giving the "green light" for stablecoin regulation (via the GENIUS act). The plan would be to make US-backed stablecoins the official legal tender currencies (USD's replacement) of the US. Other countries might end up doing the same. I think crypto will end up being stronger as a result of mass stablecoin/CBDC adoption worldwide. Not the other way around. We can't predict the future, so here's hoping for the best.
