i found a research which identified four psychological traits contributing to risk for problem gambling. these are the four Es:
escape, esteem, excess and excitement.
escape: when people try to find an escape from stress and all their other problems through gambling, more problem arises and addiction happens
esteem: when people try to find their value through materialistic things and wins in gambling, addiction happens
excess: when people gamble excessively, that is when addiction happens
and excitement: people get excitement from gambling and they no longer know how to stop and that's when addiction happens
this is my understanding of the four Es. do you agree or no?
The four Es you mentioned above really do makes sense to me because I also do engage in them and can see myself as a part of them. I will start with the escape part. Sometimes I just decide to gamble not because of the money I have or because of any other influences but simply because I want to just escape some stress especially when things around me seems a little more tough and overwhelming, I see gamble as a distraction to those things.
Secondly, I am someone that feels good whenever I gamble and win. I feel these esteem because sometimes gambling and winning especially when your friends argue about you not being able comes with a lot of excitement for me. It's like proving to them that yes I can do it even when you guys think I can't. It's a bit worrisome to me sometimes though cause I know the true measument of self worth does not rely on gambling and winning.
Thirdly, If there is anything that gets me scared of gambling most times is having a winning streak. It might sound weird to you but it is true. Once I start having a winning streak, it becomes difficult for me to stop. I begin to say let me try one more time again until I go against my gambling plans or target. This is the part I regard as the excess part.
And the last part for me is the excitement part. I think one of the things that make gambling easily becomes addictive is the adrenaline rush that comes with risking your funds and waiting to get the results. It gets your brain more addicted whenever the results come out positive because it's like waiting for a child delivery in the hospital and suddenly the doctor announces a positive result, you will shout in excitement and I feel like that's what gambling excitement and addiction comes with.
