I don't think it was a lie. The intention to have it integrated was there. The code was implemented but not activated... because, well... i think the zerocoin project was abandoned by the zerocoin team.
Last I heard was @Libertycoin was going to talk to the dev(s) to get a different anon implemented.
But honestly, even without the implementation.... at only 16.5 million coins and PoS that works well.... really fast transaction times... this coin is undervalued at 2k sats.
