I sincerely doubt DRK is a "scam." Once people get a hold of their own coins, its really hard to stop them from doing whatever they want to do with them.
Tomorrow this financial guru Max Keiser (I do not know him but he has close to 100,000 twitter followers) will dedicate a radio show to DarkCoin. He's already been championing it throughout the day, though his timing couldn't be worse.

Since launching masternode payments the network has kept randomly
forking. We're not exactly sure what is the cause, but to stop this
and restore stability we are going to fork to remove masternode
payments.
