My wallet shows "No block source available... 13 weeks behinds" for hours now. I downloaded the windows qt from OP. Am I missing something?
Add this to your birdcoin.conf. No problem here!!!!!
Syncs after just a few seconds at my end...

Put or make your birdcoin.conf in Users - "User" - Appdata - Roaming - Birdcoin
(Windows 7)
This works just great!!! The wallet starts to sync at my end in like 2 Seconds.
