daemon appears to be running ok:
But the wallet keeps giving me this error. Been like for a couple of days now. Restarted both many times plus the whole PC. Wasn't running latest versions but is now with no improvement. On Win 7. I haven't changed any settings.
Any ideas?

You should open wallet file via command string. Not directly through the wallet file open
I open it using a batch file with my wallet name and password from the command line.
So check your Firewall or Antivirus for opening the right port
Thanks for the help but it's only stopped working in the last few days. It was fine before that and an exception was added to the firewall when I installed it.
I suppose I'll try moving the wallet and then doing a complete reinstall from scratch.
EDIT: Reinstall from scratch fixed it.
