Your friend's problem wasn't windows itself, but downloading and running random files from the interwebz while naively relying on a virus scanner.

But if a hacker have this exploit, he can infect you by injecting a script in a popular website (even if the ssl certificate is good, you will be infected)
Also it's easy to infect a file and share it on a warez website without get a ban.
Linux & Mac can be infected too.
