Re: A Non-Outsourceable Puzzle to Prevent Hosted Mining (and Mining Pools)

The major features include:
- Formal definitions of Scratch-off puzzles (a generalization of Bitcoin's proof of work)
- Formal definitions of Outsource schemes (a generalization of the "shares" system used by mining pools)
- Formal definitions of Non-outsourceable puzzles (a weak version, which lets pool members "steal" the reward from a pool, and a strong version, which lets them evade detection!)
- A simple construction (no moon math, just hashes and Merkle trees) for the weak-case
- An upgraded scheme (using SNARKs and other moon math) for the stronger-case
- Proofs
- Benchmark implementation results using Pinocchio (though these would likely improve by orders of magnitude if we use libsnark instead)

I'm working on a series of future posts explaining some of the concepts in better detail and summarizing the implementation issues that petertodd, gmaxwell, and others have raised.
