Ubuntu jumped the shark a few years ago, Linux mint would probably serve you far better.
I like linux mint a lot better too. I think a lot of people given the two side by side would choose mint. I'm not so sure I like the direction Ubuntu has gone with Unity. Maybe for a tablet or something...
