If you only have $500, I think the best you can do (for new equipment) is buy 4 furys @ 1.3MH/s each -
It won't be too long now until the next generation comes out (a few months), which will allow you to get a much better value. 250MH/s for $3,795.00. -
I have no affiliation with gawminers, but it seems to be the one people complain about least.
edit: Oh, I just realized, you were considering buying something other than scrypt miners. I thought you were going to use the engine to mine 0ne exclusively. A good graphics cards might be able to generate more BTC for the money, especially since the new scrypt miners will be coming out soon.
