What's commonly referred to as "Proof of Stake" is used for generating blocks. The "Proof of Service" mechanism doesn't do that. Also you aren't being paid for "staking" but for providing a service, i.e. running a masternode. That you need to prove possession of 1000 DRK (which in fact is a proof of stake technically) is imho not directly related to being paid but to being able to run the service in the first place.
