I've been wondering about this too.
How do you prevent rouges setting up hundreds of nodes that collect data about transactions, without a financial barrier to disrupt the network and create many men in the middle sniffing transactions as they pass around ?

If that was even possible, you could create infinite Darkcoins by setting up two masternodes, getting this 500 DRK block you're talking about twice, and setting up more masternodes. Then the currency would be effectively worthless == no profit for anyone.
Anyone can set up a masternode. All you need is 1,000 DRK which is currently only about $5,940.00 USD. That's a very LOW entry cost that a lot of individuals can easily afford.
