I would disagree. By responding to the scammer, the OP made it known that his email address was valid and was (somewhat) regularly read. This will open him up to a number of additional attacks in the future.

I do like the fact that someone attempting to scam was messed with in some way, but I do believe that this was ultimately not a good idea.
