Just in case anybody was interested, I sent an email to Bitmain about the S1 upgrade roll out and this was the response I got back today:

S1 upgrade solution will be released to the public soon

No I don't know what exactly they mean by "soon" but with as many S1's I have, I hope sooner than later otherwise there all going to eBay.
