You've hit on a key weakness of the trust system.  God help users if someone on the default trust list decides to start extorting users.  Maybe those accounts are what hackers will start targeting next.

I'm increasingly convinced that the trust system does nothing that the reputation threads don't, your story is a great example of why.

Still, it was nice for them to try and make things better on the forum.

The trust system only works if and when it has proof of you scamming stealing etc. Other than that, Noobs that rely and "trust" on the trust system just for the fact some idiot like Luke-Jr put on my trust system but absolutely no scamming or stealing is involved makes me laugh......

Don't worry about it, op. smart ppl will read dumb trusts/untrusted feedback and judge themselves. More  than likely if they are smart, their judgement will go in the right direction.
