Exactly. Here is a simple test. Load your coin's wallet. If it is using the same wallet as Bitcoin, but the dev regexed "Bitcoin" and replaced it with the new coin's name, changed the graphic and possibly tweaked a setting or two, then rest assured the coin will not be going anywhere except the second page of coinmarketcap.
