I think the problem is not that the coins are free but that the distribution period is too long.

Most users are probably thinking Since I'm going to get free coins for many weeks anyway, I will just sell the one I get now.

The shorter distribution period would also enable dev team to focus on new features of the coin, which should raise the price.
