He obviously can. He never promised to stay forever. Your NAS ist still your money btw. NAS still runs, it's just that nobody is developing it at the moment.
I don't think he just left without leaving a message or transfer his work to another dev. Imagine you would develop more than a half year a software and than just leave without considering to transfer the work. I guess he's in trouble or so.
