I am thinking about creating a mascot for darkcoin... sort of an animal like creature.
What are animals who are commonly associated with darkness or hiding, etc?

Go for the owl !
.Definitely go for the owl! Perceived as wise yet secretive, and not overtly threatening, Denizens of the dark. Known for silence, wariness, and accuracy. Their readily recognized form allows for both simplification and significant stylizing; easily iconized, or turned into a poster, road sign, teeshirt, bumper sticker or coffee mug. Believe me, I should know... :-)
