ROLLBACK ANNOUNCEMENT -- HARDFORK OCTOBER 11, 7PM GMT

The rollback will be taking place on October 11, 7PM GMT see the following Countdown Timer for when the rollback will occur. At this time the new binaries will be made available for download.

Again a huge thanks to everyone in this awesome community for sticking it out through this ordeal, the rollback will happen and the coin will progress forward.

Here's a very detailed breakdown of everything related to the rollback:

  • The rollback will occur at block 7629, this is prior to when the 10M block were generated in the exploit, this is the point at which the exchanges automatically halted trading and is where the rollback must occur.
  • The tests have been excellent, the new blockchain has been established over the past day as pure PoS, and the coin has been staked over the past day (since block 7629) to ensure that PoS is stable. This was done because we needed to establish the fork and make sure it was stable over the past day, the coin has been running very smoothly and we are ready to have the scheduled hardfork as planned on October 11 at 7PM GMT.
  • We have meticulously gone through the blockchain to track down the attackers and have linked the same attackers' address that created the 10M block to other amounts that were minted. The following: http://ghostcoin.info/address/GT62jvN96FYE1twU8rbHLiu3iQE1BMo9wa shows the other amounts that were minted prior to the exchanges shutting down the markets, as you can see the balance for the account is 0. Implying that all of the coins have been sent to the exchange and have already been/bought and sold and that rolling back to prior than this would make it impossible for the exchanges to re-open markets as they would be in an inconsistent state, this has been expressed by Bittrex in their announcement.
  • Regarding the other minted amounts prior to the 10M, you can see the attackers had multiple transactions totalling to 5.8M, as you can also see on the block explorer, each new block solved was immediately sent to the same exchange wallet and traded at market value, therefore rolling back any further would not fix anything and make it impossible for exchanges to enable the coins without being in an inconsistent state.
  • In addition to the exploited amounts described above, there were also blocks generated with a 400K reward such as the following: http://ghostcoin.info/block/00000000003a3465572e5c9e681a4c03731ff95daad67807142d0cca9937c2aa, which account for the supply being over 20 million, these however appear to be the result of a malicious pool operator. The miners on this pool would have received a higher reward than usual, most of these coins it appears have not been redeemed as the miners were most likely waiting until PoW ended before selling their coins.
  • Moving forward the new coin supply will be in total 27 million rather than 20 million, however we would like to emphasize that many of the exploited coins have already been removed from circulation. The attackers' account on bittrex that exploited the 10M have been frozen and we will work with exchanges to freeze any other accounts the attackers have.

We understand that this is not a perfect solution, but unfortunately there is no perfect solution in this scenario. After a lengthy discourse with multiple parties we decided that this is the best course of action moving forward. Again we would like to thank everyone in the community for their patience, there will be another update prior to the rollback to address any additional questions as everything is setup in preparation for the rollback.
