No, clearly he doesn't owe them any money.. there was never a contract, right bluemeanie?  It'd help your case a lot if you just explained that instead of ignoring it.. clearly you didn't do anything illegal.. unethical, could be argued.. but illegal?  Absolutely not. No contract but money in your hand isn't theft.. it's like if I walked up to you and handed you $1,000,000 and then got mad that you didn't give it back after I handed it to you.  I mean yes, clearly they thought he was going to finish the project and I get why they are mad, but there wasn't a contract.  Then they start posting articles saying he stole money and they start making death threats and changing his posts on nxtforum.org...  what is wrong with you people?
