How is it any different than spending $$ on mining for coins on release? Either way it's money out of your pocket on a brand new coin.
this is exactly how I think of it. People seem to not understand that mining isn't cheap and it can lose you money just as ICO would. But ICO has the potential that these money might be spent by a honest dev to create a great product. Money spent for mining are lost 100% of the time, as if it's a guaranteed scam
