Re: This idea might save Bitcoin low trade volums

I don't think many people are actually buying stuff with it.

A common misconception.

I pay my bills with dollars because currently that is the only option. Everything else, I use bitcoins.

Yes, actually if you look at bitcoincharts, you can see that $200 million in USD is spent per day in BTC.

When my 5850 (and 5870) fans fail, I just pop off the cowling, strap an 80mm casefan to the HSF unit with zip ties and fire it up.  Keeps the cards cooler than stock fan, looks ghetto as hell, but works great and its' cheap/easy to replace if/when the fan fails again.

Woot, thanks for the tip!

Re: [Question] Old/Broken 5850s Worth Selling?
by
5850Guy
on 11/04/2012, 23:06:10 UTC
I have a handful (~8) of old 5850's from when I was GPU mining (power cost is too high). Some still work, but most have dead fans and one needs the heatsink re-applied. So I'd have to sell them "as-is" and any buyers would need to repair the fan/heatsink. I don't know if they're even worth selling in this condition. Any comments would be appreciated.

I just sold a 5850 for 20 BTC.  So, yes, they are worth selling.

WTS - Selling Radeon 5850 card for cheap - SOLD!

Well all, I am selling my Sapphire Radeon 5850. The fan is inoperable, but the card and heatsink are just fine. This is a great gaming card, and it's also fantastic for Bitcoin mining--I overclocked it up to 357 Mhashes a sec.  I know others with this card on the Wiki have gotten it up to 400 mhashes/sec.

I paid $150 for this card like a month / month and a half ago.

I monitored the temperature and fan speed religiously, which lead me to realize the Sapphire fan (fan bearings) was dying.  It wouldn't spin above 2300 RPM, and it's supposed to spin 4000.  When I first got it, it spun 4000.

As a result, I bought a new GPU fan (~$10), which is the red fan you can see in the picture.  This led me to discover the reference fan from ATI has a power cable that is too short to reach the non-reference power cable plug on a Sapphire card.  Awesome!

Which lead me to buy a 12" PWM 4-pin power cable extender (~$10 shipped), which you can see in picture #2.

Once it arrived, I was thoroughly disappointed to see the cable extender is slightly too large to fit into either the ATI fan or the Sapphire card connectors.

This led me to take some pictures and place it up here for sale.

This card works, but the fan is non-operational as it's not plugged in.  Either get the fan working, get a new fan/heatsink/etc, or use this with your favorite water-cooling.

I am asking 20 BTC. I've just run out of patience with it.  You will receive everything in the pictures plus the molex to GPU power adapters.

I will ship within the US to any address.  I do require payment up front but I will put it up on Bitmit or something like that if you don't trust me to ship you the card.  Don't worry--I am looking to get rid of this thing!!

Here is a picture of my mining activity.  The card ran for 10-14 days before I took it offline as the fan started to make a noise and die.

Re: Cheapest electricity in the world
by

I am wondering which countries in the world have the cheapest electricity, and would thus be ideal for mining bitcoins.

I am from Australia, and I can tell you that we have some of the most overpriced electricity in the world, meaning I will probably need to go overseas if i want to mine competitively.

Maybe...ours is like 12 cents per KWH in my part of the USA.

Maybe look into mining contracts?

Is there any cheaper alternatives to the Butterfly Labs Single? I am looking to buy a low power unit.

Lower than 80 watts?

Well, there are some cheaper ones, but the BFL Single is great from a stacking standpoint, and from a megahashes per watt standpoint.

It's a great deal.

What are you looking for?

Re: Introduction and what I want to achieve

Still doesn't help out answering the questions put forth. is there currently a way to mine other bitchains at the same time, not supported by p2pool such as geistgeld and liquidcoin?

Hmm, there might be.  Right now you can mine BTC and NMC at the same time, it's called "merged mining".

It might be possible with those others you mentioned, it would be a feature of the pool.  The pool will give you the work.  One of the pools I used had a lot of different chains you could mine against, and it would even automatically give you different blockchain work depending on which had the best profitability for you based on your mhashes, current difficulty, etc.  I forget what that one was called.

[quick check]

Ah, it was called Coinotron.  What you want is merged mining.  You just need a pool that supports the blockchains you want.

Re: Whitelist Requests (Want out of here?)
by

I wouldn't mind being whitelisted.  I've been following BitCoin for about 2 months now.

I've probably spent close to 50 hours researching and discussing BitCoin with various friends and co-workers.
I bought a Radeon 5850 after extensive research, review of the Wiki, and review of the Mining section on this forum.  I've read dozens and dozens of posts here.  I'd love to have a BFL Single in my hands.

I overclocked my 5850 up to 357 Mhashes a sec, much better than the 287 it came with stock, but not quite the 400 I'd like to hit.

Unfortunately, my GPU fan died before I could get too far, but not before I was able to earn 2 BTC and I went over to spendbitcoins.com and bought a Barnes and Noble gift card direct with BTC.  I can't tell you how cool that is.

I'd like to branch out on the forum and do a little more than reading  Grin

Re: making a living mining?
by

You certainly can.  But it involves a lot of risk too, since there is no guarantee of those profits in the future.

In the peak of my GPU mining, I could make $100/day.  Now, I am making $6/day, and more than half of that goes to pay the electricity for them.  And that return will get even lower as more of these more efficient miners start being used.

Dude!  When were you making $100/day?

Re: Sinking ships
by

Why do governments sink ships instead of melting it back to base metals?

Because it's easier to sink a sheep than bring it on-shore, break it down, and melt it down?

At least for now.  Once metals become scarce (if they do), their value will skyrocket and these things won't happen anymore.

And, congratulations on Post #2

Re: What do you want your BitCoins to buy?
by
5850Guy
on 06/04/2012, 00:18:57 UTC
I am starting an online storefront that accepts only bitcoins for payment.  I have been able to work out most of the hard part on the backend, but now I want to know what it really is that people are looking for online.  No idea if I just need to go for general goods and computer parts or if there are any specific elements.

Please share your thoughts and let me know what is needed.  I'll find some way of returning the favor like hooking you up with a coupon or something.

Steam gift codes are good.  No need to ship and you can electronically transfer the goods.

Hey guys, im just wondering whats my best way to buy bitcoins with paypal. Do I have to convert paypal to another currency or what ?

I've done it through virwox.com before.

It's a complicated process of paypal--->Linden Dollars--->BTC.

The fees are kind of ridiculous too.

Hopefully someone will post a better way..............

Re: Is it possible to solve the mining process differently?
by
5850Guy
on 05/04/2012, 23:56:31 UTC
hashing algorithms are designed to be "trap door" functions.  That is they are designed to work only one way.
A Trapdoor function is not the same as a One-way function. The difference is that with a trapdoor function, there is some secret which, if known, allows you to compute any inverse you want of the function. If SHA-256 was a trapdoor function, it would mean that someone who knows its secret would be able to find blocks effortlessly.

Oh snap!  That would be bad.

I'm always impressed how well Satoshi designed BitCoin.  There is a lot of good security in it.
