That's what happens when smart contracts are insecure.

Re: Bitcoins not to be used for payments and settlements for now: RBI

The "for now" really is the great news here, if that's really how they formulated the statement. If China would have ban ICO's or exchanges "for now" in an official manner, that would have been positive news.

Re: what is bubble?

Tulip mania was a bubble in a time where the Dutch really really loved their tulips but the prices got so ridiculous that everyone tried selling, instead of everyone trying to buy them.

Beanie babies was also a bubble, 2008 was also a real estate bubble. The difference between all of these and BTC is that the tulips, the houses, the stuffed toys, all were in unlimited supply and they didn't serve an actual purpose. Yes, BTC is exciting and people might rush into it but it actually serves a very good and targeted purpose. It's not just a pretty flower.

Re: Why Do Existing Companies run ICO?

It's fast, profitable and makes for good PR to do an ICO if you're a well established company.

Maybe us in the crypto world see ICO's differently but for someone who's not familiar with what goes around on a daily (or hourly) basis and just heard about how this and that ICO raised hundreds on millions of $ in hours, the prospect of a well established company to announce an ICO, is quite interesting I'd imagine.

Re: Altcoins naming

Yes, it's technically possible to create a different coin with the same name. It will be two separate blockchains and it will work just fine. People or may not have a difficult time discerning the two but that's a different story.

Most of the time small acronyms are duplicate by mistake, it's rare that someone duplicates some cryptocurrency with malicious intent and I don't think that would work anyways.
Exchanges are free to set their own acronyms in the trading pairs should they want to add two coins that have the same official acronym.

So you can create a different coin with the same name on another blockchain ... can you create different coin with the same symbol/name on the same blockchain, like ERC20 ?
You technically can but in order to get listed on ICO websites or even better, on exchanges, you need to show you're a serious project. You can copy and call yourself a coin and steal some funds but people are very fast in finding out these things so make sure you read the official channels ALWAYS.

Re: Welcome to the new 2013

I think everyone pretty much expects that the price will drop heavily at some point (this year). China news was a massive one and it didn't hurt it as bad as I would have expected it.

Which to me, it shows how strong of a support it has worldwide. Not only that, but financial institutions and Wall Street cash are now coming massively into crypto. A massive drop would make a few people very rich indeed.  Cool

If the magnetic poles invert, BTC might take a hit. But if the poles invert, we're also gonna have bigger problems than that.  Shocked we should be safe for a few thousands years but you never know...(doomsday mode on Roll Eyes )

Re: BCH bleeding death?

I don't think it's dying yet, with Bitmain and Ver heavily invested into it. The current drop has 2 good causes: the overall drop of altcoins before the BTC fork as people want to cash in on more free money (As with BCH) but ALSO, BCH has been recently credited on 3 big exchanges and there are a lot of "free money" people who are cashing in from the previous fork.

Unless China outright bans mining, I don't think it will die, but lets wait and see.

Re: China playing a game :D

It is a possibility that bitcoin price will go to the moon. I guess it will go towards 20000-50000 in 1-3 years. China is the main producer of bitcoin and knows what is doing to protect its people and their wealth. If I were Chinese and the biggest producer of bitcoin I would the same. Of course I would want to have all the bitcoin that I produce for me and appreciate its value.
It's rumored that they are planning to ban mining...which would be a total clusterfuck in the crypto world if they do that. The previous bans would be nothing compared to the effects a mining ban would have...

Re: Cryptocurrency is a great way to teach math in schools

I had a teacher at University that talked about bitcoin in his economics courses, a few years back. It wasn't a whole class on crypto but it was really good to see that kids are receptive and open to it and I'm sure that thanks to him some have bought into it.

So yeah, I'm all for crypto in schools.  Grin
