Dear DPL community,

Firstly, we would love to extend our sincere thanks for your amazing efforts in the first few months of the DPL crowdsourced archiving campaign. It has been great to see how the DPL community has grown, and begun to integrate with the wider Arweave protocol ecosystem.

As we are a few months into the campaign, we would like to share with you some of our strategic thinking around the DPL and the reasons why we are thrilled to support it as the permaweb ecosystem expands.

Because permanent information storage has never been available before, helping people understand how information permanence is valuable to them is a core part of our mission. The Arweave community likes to show, not tell. That is why we are happy to be funding the Decentralised Public Library’s crowdsourced archiving initiatives to store valuable information inside the network, forever. This serves four core strategic functions:

  • Education: As the DPL community absorbs more information from the centralised web, much of this information will be lost from its original location over time. Via media coverage and other outreach activities, these pieces of data that would otherwise have vanished from the web allow us to demonstrate the value of archiving immutable, timestamped copies of information (see examples below).
  • Security of scale: As the original copies of data archived by DPL community members are lost from the centralised web, the permaweb will contain the only provably unmodified copies of that information in existence. As these instances become more frequent, the effects will be compounding: If you are looking for a safe place to store your family photos, your contracts, etc., why not store them alongside the only remaining records of valuable historical artifacts? It is akin to having the ability to store your important documents inside the vaults of a modern national archive -- the safety provided to the historical artifacts is also given to your data. With enough storage of socially valuable records, we are reaching the point of critical mass at which maintaining the archive will have enough social as well as financial incentives to make its perpetuation even more certain.
  • Information-backed currency: Information is the heart of the new economy. The Economist has famously described data as the ‘new oil’. Because the Arweave cryptographically entangles its tokens (AR) with the data stored in the network, we believe that filling the network with valuable knowledge and history will be positive for the Arweave community. Imagine if the Bitcoin blockchain was filled with the only remaining copies of records of history over the last decade. This is where the Arweave network is heading.
  • Pro-social use cases: Like all communication technologies, the Arweave has many possible uses. The Decentralised Public Library’s campaigns and community engagement efforts help demonstrate the pro-social uses of Arweave and steer the early permaweb adopters towards helpful and valuable behaviour. You can read more about how the Arweave protocol itself combats potential malicious uses on the Arweave website.

In the opening stages of the DPL’s archiving campaign, we have been excited to see these strategic aims realised in practice. Here are just a couple of examples:

  • Aiding mainstream international affairs reporting: The DPL community has saved numerous valuable historical records from permanent loss since its inception. An example of this is their effort to store and verifiably timestamp valuable documents relating to the 2018 Kerch Strait naval incident between Russia and Ukraine, in real time. The community’s efforts led to the permanent preservation of numerous documents that were subsequently erased from the centralised web. Some of these documents were later used by reporters in major mainstream press and tech outlets to write about the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war. Through this, a broad international audience was exposed to and educated about the benefits of the permaweb.
  • Holding blockchain projects accountable: One of the uses of the Arweave is as an accountability ledger -- recording who said what, when. In mid-2018 the DPL community undertook a campaign to archive whitepapers and documents related to many crypto projects. Since that time, many of the original documents have been removed from the websites of the projects involved. These efforts highlight how the preservation of information helps drive accountability and transparency in the blockchain industry.

...and the DPL has only just begun! We are excited to see where the amazing DPL community takes the project next and to support its large-scale archiving efforts.

my AR balance is still 0

As I just mentioned to Wistar, it's possible you have generated a fresh wallet with 0 AR. No problem though, you can grab a wallet that comes pre-loaded with 1 AR right here: https://tokens.arweave.org/#/wallet

Let me know if you're still having issues and I'll simply send you 1 AR directly instead.
still 0, I've tried it many times

Hi everyone!

As of a few minutes ago, round 7 has begun! There aren’t any substantial changes for you to be aware of, just remember to follow the existing rules and ask me if you have any questions!
.

Primarily, in response to community feedback, we have changed when we set the USD->ETH peg to move it closer to your actual payout date. So, now the payout date will be consistently one week after the end of an archiving round (for example, if the round closes on the 2nd of October, you will be paid on the 9th of October before midnight CEST). 24 hours before that payout deadline, the USD->ETH peg will be set at 11.59pm CEST (for example, at 11.59pm CEST on the 8th of October).

Thanks everyone for your participation - remember to join us on Discord to ask questions and meet other community members! Here's an invite link.

Hello all archivers!

Round 5 has officially closed now, and round 6 has opened!  Grin

Thanks for all of your submissions - we will be evaluating these over the next week, and the payout for round 5 will happen on or before the 25th of September.

Check out the OP for new alterations to the rules (as always please make sure you read it thoroughly at the beginning of every round) - the biggest change this time is that you can choose to be paid in AR or ETH when you register for the campaign. If you have previously registered, please do not register again, but simply email me (team@arweave.org) or DM me on our https://discord.gg/2cCwMTwDiscord server (@arweave-india) and tell me your preference. By default, archivers will be paid in ETH unless we hear otherwise, however.

As always let me know over on our Discord server if you have any questions or need some help.

Best wishes,

- India and the team

Hi all!

Thanks for participating in archiving period 3, which finished at 12 noon CEST today (Wednesday the 21st of August).

There are some tweaks to the processes for round 4 (which has now already opened!), so although the OP has been fully updated, I thought it would be useful to also post a summary of the changes here.

Introducing the new bonus topic prizes!

So, for archiving period/round 4 beginning today (21st August) we have introduced a new bonus topic! The bonus topic is: current protests and political upheaval in Hong Kong. There are new, additional prizes available for people who archive on the bonus topic!

Just like with the general archiving topic, there is a prize available for the ‘best archiver’ of Hong Kong content, and also for the ‘best submission’ related to Hong Kong. You should nominate one archive for consideration for the ‘best submission’ prize, and everyone will automatically be considered for the ‘best archiver’ prizes, as always.

There is now an additional Google form to report your Hong Kong-related archives. All content submitted to the Hong Kong Google form will automatically also be considered as part of your daily archiving reward total - you should *not* submit the HK content to both forms.

The goal of the bonus topic is to encourage people to archive content about a specific event or events currently happening in the world, that we anticipate will be of great interest to future historians.

Make sure to keep to the usual copyright rules when archiving for the bonus topic.

Changes to copyright penalties

So, we have also introduced a new system for how we penalise copyright infringement. In short, if you report infringing content instead of automatically losing all rewards for that report, there will instead be an overall penalty of 10% per infringing archive across your rewards total. Additionally, as before, all copyright-infringing URLs will be voided and those individual archives will not count towards your rewards total.

For example, if you are originally due to receive 2 ETH for your contributions, but you have archived two infringing URLs, you will receive a 20% penalty, meaning you will be paid out 1.6 ETH.

As always, please do DM me on Discord (arweave-india) if you have copyright questions, I’ll always respond ASAP!

Archive reporting

As with the last archiving period, you need to report all of your daily archives to both the Google form(s) and the once per day to this Bitcointalk bounty thread.

Remember, If you’re taking part in the bonus topic archiving, you need to submit that in the special Google form, and also in your daily Bitcointalk archive report too.

You should nominate one archive per daily report in the Google form(s) to be considered for the ‘best submission’ prizes!

---

Please ask any questions you like, I will of course answer you ASAP, and then I can also alter and improve the instructions in the Bitcointalk thread to make it clearer for everyone Smiley.

Thanks everyone and good luck!

Hi everyone -

Thank you all very much for the incredible response we received from the community! In total, over 9000 submissions were made during archiving period 2 and we couldn’t be happier. So thank you all very much!

Due to the huge number of submissions for us to collate and analyse, we will unfortunately need to slightly push back the payment date for archiving period 2, from today (12th of August) to Wednesday (14th of August). This will give us enough time to thoroughly evaluate your thousands of submissions and guarantee everyone is rewarded accurately and fairly.

As many of you know (if you’ve been here since the beginning!), we have been running archiving campaign rounds for several months now and have never been late on a payment deadline before. We have put several measures and resources in place for the current round to ensure that this doesn’t happen again, but in the meantime we hope you can accept our apologies for the slight delay.

Thank you all for your patience, and for making this campaign so successful and popular!

Hi everyone!

Over the weekend, everyone who successfully participated in the previous round received their rewards! This included two special prize winners, who I am pleased to announce here today for you all.

Firstly, the prize for best single submission to the archiving campaign goes to pushups44! This was a tough call as so many great submissions were reported! Our favourite archive was this one: https://arweave.net/513NnyApGLKdtmgcQXS7Ofp9FyI1Ua1ia8t0DvtYYug - a discussion of new piece of legislation aimed at preventing discrimination against people due to their genetic makeup. This archive is educational, and on a fascinating topic that is likely to become extremely important in the future. Pushups44 also archived many other fascinating pieces of future history, including a transcription of Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech (https://arweave.net/4SyfUijAvWhfBmkDfdHctYUYPS6DDEbnXQ2pahQIoYs), and this press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, discussing the U.K.’s charging of Julian Assange (https://arweave.net/v61ri31_2AD7JjtdONEOgTZH0P1omNbWnYszRf9zj94).

Secondly and finally, our prize for best overall archiver for this period goes to Bullbearsaur! Not only did you submit the most valid archives out of anyone during this period, you did excellently avoiding copyright infringing content while archiving a wide variety of sources and information. Some examples of Bullbearsaur's archives include the governments’ position statements on international conflicts (https://arweave.net/y6bk_f8uResCVdntYu0Syz4rk1SyKqQ-hWxjZDCX0_8/, https://arweave.net/OY_JqgPNcG1BdBdzungL5p_VMGf9ktpdcCcEAxc3cfM), and human rights issues across the globe (https://arweave.net/fgiPVwyjRciHQEPT1s3d_qAxCmLzqfj8Wr7iJ6KDNEY).

Our thanks go out to everyone who took part in this first part of our ongoing archiving campaign! Overall, the quality of submissions was excellent!

If you have any questions about your rewards or any other aspect of the archiving campaign, the best way to get in touch with me is via our Discord server, here’s an invite link for you - join us! Discord server invitation link.

I've read it including all new rules. My question was about a new topic to avoid misunderstandings. For all previous rounds a list was posted similar like here:

Round 1: Bitcoin / Blockchain
Round 2: Government content / press releases...
Round 3: Internet history
Round 4: historical contents, (political) events...
Round 5: ?

So I was asking for an official announcement to avoid archiving off-topic content.

I don't have discord.

And one more question: is it necessary to fill your form every round?  Smiley

Those were the previous rules when the campaign was first started so it doesn't matter anymore now.
Just read the new rules stated on the OP as well as the FAQ's and you're good to go.

India is not very active here as much as on Discord. I suggest you create an account and pm India there so you won't be waiting for tokens top-up for a while.

In my opinion, no need to fill the form every round, unless you'll be using another wallet then you should consult with India in discord.

Thanks so much for helping out with answers D1v4c!

They're all spot-on and correct  Grin

Hey Kaniin

The topic is the same as the previous round Smiley

People seemed to be finding high-quality content and there is a lot to explore in this topic so we have kept the same topic for this current round.

I really do recommend you sign up to Discord - it's very, very quick to sign up and you don't have to download anything (you can just use the web app at https://discordapp.com/). D1v4c is totally right - it's really easy for me to give instant replies on Discord and difficult to make sure all queries here in this thread are answered as quickly. Over on Discord you can send me a PM any time!

I have topped up your wallet of course.

The OP has new rules & guidance in it so make sure you read this! Thanks!

- India, and the Arweave team

P.S. Oh yes there is no need to fill in the form again!

A new round has opened!

Hello all,

Thanks again for participating in previous rounds. I'm happy to say a brand new round - with a brand new set of rules - has now begun!

Even if you have participated in previous rounds, please read the new rules carefully as things have changed up. Happily this means that you can now submit many more archives for rewards, but we will be much stricter on rule-breaking so pay careful attention.

As always, please reach out to me with any questions you have. We expect there will be more questions this time as things have changed! We now have a brand new Decentralised Public Library Discord server (opened today!) for all of your questions and discussions! Join me over there at this link:  https://discord.gg/5nZUGuF

Looking forward to continuing to archive alongside you all!

Hi!

I will join. Do you have a Google Spreadsheet?

Hi!

Cool! We're not using a Google spreadsheet to report people's archives - just asking people to register with the Google form (you can complete it here).
Yes i know. I just want to check Google Spreadsheet of your form.

And I'm almost out of AR.  Cry

Hey Kaniin!

I've topped up your wallet & replied to your DM. Let me know if you have any questions!
