Given the non-existant minimum size, couldn't this also be used as a way to send secure, encrypted messages without ever hitting an email/phone server?

That right there is a damn valuable feature.  .001btc transactions as the new untracable text message

What about an exchange doing WoW gold -> BTC - Are the stereotypes true?  Are many chinese farmin' MMO gold, or at least have the ability to easily buy it?

Seems like this whole thing would be illegal in china - Have you checked?

And the USD is just getting stronger and stronger, everyone is flying to safety, and according to all financial media (Bloomberg, CNBC etc) right now that is, you wont believe it, US treasury bonds and USD.

Guess who has the biggest printing press and isn't afraid to use it.

The crazyness will continue until suddenly it doesn't, and that'll be even more scary.

Bitcoin is money.  If you want to take other money you have and buy bitcoin money with it, thats fine.  If you want to work and accept/request bitcoins in exchange, thats fine.

if you want to understand the protocol, I recommend reading the Bitcoin White Paper by Satoshi

Bitcoin is something new.  Uncle Joe understands credit cards, but he doesn't understand the difference between good money or bad money.

That lack of understanding means Bitcoin is a hard sell, although with the performance of the markets it's getting easier and easier to explain it to him.

Re: How to profitably create Bitcoin forks without causing economic chaos
by
Atom
on 04/08/2011, 18:53:10 UTC
This implies there is a finite amount of value in BTC, and that any fork will neccesarily draw that value away from BTC into the fork.

any fork will get value the same way BTC did - People buying into it with an existing currency.  That will most likely be USD.

This is only a problem because there are problems funding with USD right now.

As far as relative valuations go, whats the point of having a fork if they trade for exactly the same value?  If you want something to be priced exactly the same as BTC I recommend.... BTC.....

lol

Unless the point here is to create a new "early adopter" gold rush while also guaranteeing against non-adoption (the peg), this is a non-starter

How is $20 looking less and less likely again?
So BTCs drop quite a bit over the past 2-3 days - there isn't any reason why it wouldnt go back up soon. The "crash" (if you can easily call it that) is a result of a few things, at least what I gather, including the MyBitcoins scam and the fact that BTCs hit $20 so fast at first for example. The MyBitcoins scam was an immediate and one time occurrence that'll balance out very shortly.

To say that it won't go back to $20 for a long time is a bit of a long stretch.
To say that it'll NEVER go back to $20 again is an even longer stretch.

This is what early adopters would like to believe, but the crash is due to people realizing bitcoins have no purpose and hence no value unless you are a drug user who prefers online transactions.  If the market were more liquid, I could see bitcoins having some value to investors, but judging by the recent lack of depth on the buyside, this is clearly not the case.

Isn't this analysis ignoring one big thing - It's hard/time consuming/expensive to go from USD -> BTC right now, or really any non-digital currency.

Look at the timing of past surges - There is money trying to get in, and just not getting past the funding hurdle?

Add to that the series of amateur hour mistakes from various bitcoin organizations and thefts, this seems like a pretty extreme negative scenario... until the funding part eases up, at which point the market gets an infusion of hot cash and we're back to the races.

Are you mindful of those factors?  It seems like your analysis is purely based on the charting, which is an incomplete picture by any standards.

next resistance is $9

Honestly though if you're not in a shot-term trading position this isn't anything to get upset about.  Outside of the internet failing the realities of bitcoin are too compelling for it to die.   And in an environment like this (the broader financial markets), Bitcoin isn't going to get any less attractive.

As far as the move goes - I chalk it up to growing pains - lots of amateur hour shenanigans from the various exchanges and businesses, plus the difficulty of getting your $$ into BTC.

I bought some more at $10 and will buy again at $4 if we get there

Read "The Starfish & The Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations"  (you can also watch a presentation @ Google by the author, the current president of ICANN Rod Beckstrom)
If you want to understand why Satoshi did the right thing in "inventing Bitcoins, helping develop them a little bit, and then disappearing never to be seen again"

And frankly this is the way it has to be, if he had stayed the project would have failed.
