Very good experience with Little Snitch (http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html) here. It does not come for free but it is well designed in monitoring any outgoing network activity and let you decide very fine grained (by port, by server, until program shuts down, forever) if this activity is to be allowed.

Interesting. Just to learn more of the backgrounds: Is there a way to check this on OS X as well? A network monitor comes included with LittleSnitch and there I can see the addresses the Bitcoin client is connecting to. But it does not show any speed information.

To be clear: the client is working well at the moment. But just out of curiosity.

Problem had been resolved with the new Bitcoin Client (0.3.23). Connections are established instantly now.

Got interested listening to a conversation with Gavin Andresen on a tech-podcast two weeks ago (http://omegataupodcast.net/2011/03/59-bitcoin-a-digital-decentralized-currency/). Bought a little and had been seduced by the rally happening just afterwards. Bought some more and now waiting how the thing is evolving.

Seems it is not the rapid money thing but a long time interesting experiment. Do not plan to buy or sell but to hold.

Another related question: How can I tell if the client is able to reach through the firewall?

Client is up and running for nearly an hour but still 0 connections. Is it that slow in connecting at the moment or do I have to change something on my side?

Is there a way to determine possible connectivity?
