Re: Is it normal to not want to work at all?
by

I feel like this ever since I finally got into the role I spent four years working towards. I just want to stay home and be left alone. Every day I push myself to go do my job and it’s demands. I often find myself daydreaming about not having to work or worry about making money. To just be able to not work would be amazing. I think I’m mostly just really worn out from four intense years of study and work and now my mind and body want a rest. I’m really looking forward to a two week staycation over Christmas. Hopefully that eases my constant day dreaming about not working.
Same here. What really scares me is the people I run across that can retire and choose not to. This one old guy who was just past retirement age told me that he had enough money in the bank and a pension which would have allowed him to retire a couple of years ago but he didn't know what he would do with his time. It was the most depressing thing I'd ever heard
What's so depressing about that old guy not wanting to retire? is it because;

a) all that working made him lose his personality and he longer knows what to do with all his spare time
OR

b) the fact that he's old and still working

idk why you feel sorry for that old guy he seems to be in a good position in life
Not exactly, it's because I'm afraid it could happen to me. I could fall so deeply into my routine that I lose touch with the things that make me happy outside of work. I'm only working to earn my way into retirement so I can focus on the things I want to do. What a depressing reality it is to think that by the time you get there I could find that the only thing in my life that makes me happy anymore is going to the same mundane job I've had for years.

I grew up extremely poor to the point where I had to use the bathroom in either a bucket or a hole outside. Moved after I turned 19 through a program for youth and have an apartment, savings, and I'm going to school for a career in healthcare. It felt weird buying a laptop for classes now that the Pandemic pretty much changed everything. Just bought myself new clothes too since I've had the ones I have now since my late teens with the exception of my shoes.

Most photos about you are taken with a crap smartphone camera by someone who has no idea how to make good photos. I'm pretty sure that even an amateur photographer with an OK camera could capture you in your handsomeness. But good photography skills paired with a decent camera gear does not happen that often, unless you pay someone for it.

I wouldn't say there is anything wrong with it at all. Everyone needs time to themselves, just because you have a family doesn't change that. I finish work around midnight and I enjoy being able to come home and do my own thing for a couple of hours before going to sleep.
Ha, I even have my own room in the attic with my stuff. A men cave, but I'm the wife and my husband controls the living room. It was a demand for a new home from both of us: I need my own room.

That is really not a normal thing in the Netherlands where homes are small. I do my crafts and such in it, I do have a painting set up for the kids, but they visit in my room and have to ask.

It's wonderful!!

I also work to midnight and enjoy an hour alone in my own room at the end of it. And a few hours in weekends.

Today we are married nine years. Putting up your own boundaries to stay sane is very good marriage etiquette.

Last job I worked.

"Yea, everyone here is new, but it's totally because of covid"

"The boss doesn't like people going out to get lunch because they're afraid you'll never come back, so being your own lunch"

"You'll get weird looks if you leave on time". It was a chinese owned company with heavy chinese work culture influence so you were expected to stay overtime all week.

Also "the people here are nice but it's pretty stressful".

Eta: also was told by my trainer "you want to know the best advice I can give you? Find another job". This was like...my 2nd week in.

I'm a zookeeper, I love it but for the most part it's pretty unglamorous. I spend 10% of my time talking to the public, 10% of my time "playing with animals," 20% doing paperwork, and the other 60% is preparing food or shoveling various forms of poop.

And depending on the species, the poop can be easily 1000 times worse than dog or cow poop. I type this comment as I'm just getting home from a day of cleaning the otter enclosure, and my husband still won't enter the room with me even after a shower.

Re: What is cheaply made but sold at a ridiculous price?

I was a certified optician and ran a lens lab for Pearle Vision in the early 2000's.

Our most expensive frames, excluding the weird Armani shit we carried, cost us $20-$30 per frame. They sold for $200-$400 depending. Our cheapest frames cost us $2-3 each, and none sold for less $50.

The lenses, that's a lot of markup. I started in a brand new store, and we had a brand new lab full of Essilor hardware. Latest and greatest at the time. Standard lenses, nothing special just the standard CR32 plastic in a typical prescription? They cost $2 or so and we charged $40 each. So a "basic" pair of glasses cost us $8 in materials and was sold for $130.

The worst markup was on the high end lenses. At Pearle (at that time) the top end were the MTPROA lenses. Micro-thin polycarbonate aspheric lenses with anti-scratch and anti-reflective coating.

Basically, if you have a strong prescription (+- ~3 or so) aspheric can make a much thinner and lighter lens that can give you the same vision a thicker traditional lens does. Add in anti-scratch ($) anti-reflective ($) and the cost of the lenses alone were around $400 for the customer. Pearle Vision's cost for the lense blanks? $23.

The entire cost of the Essilor equipment in the lens lab at my location was only ~$250000, and we regularly sold $800+ glasses.

And, the part that I really hate, Mainecare (Maine medicare) at the time wouldn't provide coverage for anti-scratch coating (it was technically an "upgrade"). We couldn't buy lense blanks that didn't have it. My instructions were to strip the anti-scratch coating when making lenses for Mainecare clients. I ran the lab. Guess what I never did.
I'm a -8.25 and at almost 40 years old, I've only now hit the place where I can pay for my glasses in one payment. I'm even more grateful that my parents could afford to pay for my glasses as a kid. I don't think I got plastic lenses until I was in high school. Glass all the way.
My eyes are even worse than yours and I’ve had really good luck with Zenni. Even with high index lenses, all the extra coatings, and transitions lenses my last pair only cost about $110.

A lot flipped houses. Be careful when looking at recently remodeled houses. Most of these are cheap flips with nothing more than some new paint, flooring and appliances. It becomes very apparent when you actually view the house in person and the doors don’t close right, the windows are old, and everything just feels cheap

I am picturing your cameras on top of a long, thin electrical conduit, and everybody else must gingerly build the rest of stadium around it so as not to disrupt your contract.
Once at my bus stop in middle school, the bus #47 (not our bus) rolled up and slowed down, the driver opened the door without stopping, and said “I’ll be back!” The bus was completely full and she could not fit us. That was at 7:20. The 10 or so kids waited until 9:00 and no bus ever came. We all went home to try to and find rides to school. I finally got to school at 10:30.

Apparently I was the only one who showed up. The office lady did not believe my story and I was marked late.

Re: How do you make friends when you're 30+?
by

on 30/01/2021, 02:49:55 UTC
1If you have at least one friend, or know any other humans that you feel you can stand for longer than a few hours, find similar interests you have and this can lead to them introducing you to other people with the same interest (music, sports, gaming, etc.)

2NEVER turn down an invitation. Even if you're not feeling up to it, or feeling lazy, just go. You can always leave if you're not feeling it. But perhaps you might end up meeting someone who has the potential for friendship!

Its obviously hard now with COVID and so many social restrictions, but hang in there!

Re: what is the coolest useless skill you have?

I can wiggle my ears... not totally useless, kids find it hilarious
Ah, but can you wiggle them independently of one another?
That's my useless skill.
Apparently it's borderline unbelievable to some people, too: Back when I was in third grade, I made the claim that I could wiggle my ears one at a time, and a substitute teacher accused me of lying. Needless to say, I demonstrated right then and there... but even though she was looking directly at me, literally watching my ears move, the woman insisted that I wasn't actually wiggling them.
"I don't know what you're doing," she said to me, "but you aren't moving your ears. My daughter can move her ears, and it's impossible to move one without moving the other."
The punchline came when that same teacher – intent on proving me wrong – asked me to demonstrate for the class. She had apparently thought that they'd side with her.
Suffice it to say that they didn't... and for the next week or so, people kept coming up to me with demands like "Wiggle your right ear! Okay, now the left one! Now both!"
It's really weird to me that people who can wiggle their ears can't do it independently. When I was little I figured out how to wiggle them independently in such a way that it makes my head move in a circular motion and it freaked people out.
