Now bankrupt?
They lost 5 million out of 65 reported here. Not enough to go bankrupt Wink
In an extreme scenario they could get more if they sold the company and the buyer would cover the loss.

They only had ~800k equity.

According to http://www.coindesk.com/bitcoin-venture-capital/ they got 10 million dollars venture capital in october 2013.

Re: MINERS UNITE! Block the FBI coins. Do not fund violent underground organizations

Sad that more than 17% of people don't understand that the whole point of Bitcoin is that it is fungible and DOES NOT GET BLOCKED.

This is a terrible precedent.

This would be a horrible idea.

First of all the FBI had put out a public notice allowing for anyone to claim ownership in the coins to do so and no one came forward.

Next, the concept of Bitcoin is that whoever controls the private key is the person who controls the subject coins. Since the FBI (I think it is actually the US Marshall service now, but this really does not matter) controls the private key to the subject BTC address, they are the ones that control the coins. To blacklist certain coins just because you think/feel they were "stolen" would create huge problems with bitcoin. Anyone could claim and present some kind of evidence that their coins were taken unjustly regardless of if the coins were stolen or not.

Third, once the coins are sold and disbursed to the buyers of the coins, the buyers will do their thing with the cons. They may keep some of them, they may use a mixing service to transfer some to another address, they may use some to buy goods/services, they may transfer some to an exchange to sell some. Assuming the transactions get confirmed then the majority (if not all) of the coins would be in the hands of someone who have nothing to do with the FBI nor had anything to do with the sale of the coins. It would be unjust to punish people just because they received coins from some unknown party (and would likely not have known prior to the transaction).

Wrong.

Re: Gox summary please
by
BITCOIN-PIZZA-DAY
on 22/04/2014, 04:21:56 UTC
Were the coins:

a. Lost. As in "These coins no longer exist." "The private key is unknown/unknowable."

b. Stolen, and therefore still in circulation.
Another more likely (in my opinion) theory is that a large chunk of coins were simply 'lost' in an effort to enrich an insider.  Many people think they know who that is, but it really could be a number of people.   One clue, part of the initially 'lost' 200K coins were moving while Gox claimed they were lost.  It is VERY unlikely that a server was just doing that on its own.  Someone in my opinion was trying to take those coins and were caught by astute blockchain watchers.

If he did - he used Bitcoins valued at $10 and less do to that in 2011/2012.

Coinbase got 25m funding for example. If Mtgox needed 10m for the first two years, then this explains why 650k coins are missing. Even 650k coins are only 6.5m at $10 coins.

He probably means the 5 million DHS stole in May 2013.

From what it seems they have no plans to return that money to creditors. Stealing is okay if you're the government.

Well, yes, he's bad.
Losing or stealing half a billion dollars worth of customer assets makes you a bad guy.

A strange world in which we live in. Steal $100, and you go to jail. Steal hundreds of millions of $$$, and you are still free!

That's because the godvernment has them.

Re: A possible way to track MT.Gox addresses
by
BITCOIN-PIZZA-DAY
on 07/04/2014, 23:45:19 UTC
Best to locate mtgox coins is to that:

Create a database with all blockchains transactions around 30 million: http://codesuppository.blogspot.de/2014/03/how-to-extract-every-single-bitcoin.html?view=classic
Need a fast comp with a lot of RAM for that.

Match the records from the leaked mtgox database and boom you have located 500k coins.
