A suggestion would be to use the search function and then ask relevant questions.

Ah don't go down this route, this forum is great for people not saying that kinda stuff!
Do you realise if everyone did as you suggested there would be no posts, which would kill activity. With more topics the forum lives on.

If the search function is your best friend why not use it and help the guy out?

One of the best forum responses I have ever read.

For some reason, I lose a lot of stability when I try to downclock the memory; or the downclocking doesn't work at all.

I've had a lot of luck increasing my hash rate by just increasing the gpu-engine config for each of my gpus.

Ya 550MH/s is at at the stock clock speed of 925MHz. Sounds like CGMiner isn't clocking your cards up to the full 1125, because if it was, you should be getting closer to 650-675MH/s. Try using a 3rd party program like GPU-z to monitor the sensors tab, and see what the actual clock speed is.

One last thing is to add this line into your config. It will help with the power consumption and temps.
Code:
"gpu-memdiff" : "-150",

Thanks, the problem was, in fact, that the gpus were not clocking 1125. They are now, and I'm getting between 1.95 gh/s to 2 gh/s for the rig. Now, time to build two more of these rigs.

What are some of the less damaging/risky changes I could make to the config to bring it up to 650 mhash/s?

Bitcoin qt is a wallet and you don't need to have one set up to mine. There are a number of other clients or instant wallets you could use to store your mining profits.

3 7970's running at only 550 mh/s each

I changed the program I am running from guiminer to cgminer and increased my hashrate by 10 mhash/s per card that way.

Is there anything I can do to increase my hash rate at this point? Or is this rig just going to be stuck at this rate, 20% below target?

Here are my cgminer settings which I copied from the forum:

"intensity" : "9",
"gpu-engine" : "0-1125",
"gpu-fan" : "0-85",
"temp-cutoff" : "90",
"temp-overheat" : "85",
"temp-target" : "75",
"auto-gpu" : true,
"auto-fan" : true,
"expiry" : "120",
"gpu-dyninterval" : "7",
"gpu-platform" : "0",
"gpu-threads" : "2",
"log" : "5",
"queue" : "1",
"retry-pause" : "5",
"scan-time" : "60",
"temp-hysteresis" : "3",
"shares" : "0",

EDIT: Now getting 600-650 mhash/s per card. I'm also not going to have physical access to the mining rigs more than a couple times a week, so stability is very important.

If you are only going to mine on these machines, the RAM you are specing out is overkill, IMO.  I have only 2 GB in my mining rigs and they are fine.

I went the AMD route, personally, and built something close to this:

ASRock 970 Extreme 4 - $100
AMD Sempron (cheapest - forget the model) - $40
RAM - 2 gigs cheap ($10, maybe $15)
Cheapest SATA HD I could find

I bought 1200 watt PSUs, but i THINK you will be fine with the 1050.
Cheapest 7970s I could but at the time

Good luck!

Thanks. Seems like a good idea to get less ram and a cheaper HD to get a better PSU.

Planning on not using risers, just placing the rigs on racks.

Thanks Kev. Good luck to you as well. The profitability for gpu mining isn't that high right now, so we're betting on bitcoins becoming worth more in relation to USD.

I have money to invest in a rig(s), but face constraints on power and space. I want to be able to post to the hardware forum.

I have been following bitcoin for years and have previously mined using my gpu with cgiminer on the Eligius pool. I believe I will be a positive asset to the BitCoinTalk community.

Probably would not be worth it at current difficulties. You would need to invest more into the rig for be it to be worth it.

Few ASICs have ever shipped. Evidence shows that they are most likely vaporware. GPU mining is the only viable option currently.

However, if the ASICs do get released, gpu mining will quickly become obsolete.
