Why dont you just report them to said agencies, watch the run on the bank as it comes out that everyone's money thats tied up has been frozen and under investigation, there would be charge backs on cards done on mass.

what i dont get is that if you paid to download the file, why should you then share it after its downloaded ? which i know totally side steps the question as to whether bitcoin would be good as a payment method

I'd definatly be interested in one possibly two (maybe more if i get some extra cash) but all depends on the price, i'm not interested if there is going to be blatent profiteering with them.

it could be because some of the people that you had dealings with where under investigation themselves or with the case of the 100k cheque it could have been forged / stolen funds. usually the banks would report dodgy goings on, sometimes they even know whats going to happen before it does - banks have seriously good intel regarding frauds and scams going on, usually for the local area, but if somebody had tried to pay in a stolen cheque then it would be a massive red flag and all accounts related would be frozen.

if your account shows unsual transactions they will report it, they might suspect you being a money mule i dont know, but it does sound like something bad's happened, if you've not done anything wrong then you've nothing to worry about although it will be more of a major inconvienece than anything, and police might want a word with you. i'm not too sure what happens after the account closure, my experience of dodgy goings on at a bank are we got told from head office that things had been reported to soca and after that you'd stay away from said account because it would be monitored, but they'd then be closed and it would be outside the banks control - at least at branch level, short of the risk assesment stuff we always had to do i didnt have a great deal to do with it so i cant say what might be going on in the background.

sounds to me maybe they think you where / are commiting fraud or money laundering. you're accoutn will be frozen and you will be reported for you, there is a very real chance you are under investigation by SOCA and the banks wont tell you shit because they can go to jail for tipping off. if they where closing the account because you where using it as a business or whatnot they would tell you, them not saying anything makes me think its something very serious and going on at them about it won't make them tell you, the fact they are hanging up on you makes me think there is a note on your account saying your a suspect in a fraud investigation or something and nobody wants to get fired/ arresed for letting something slip they shouldn't.

also in regards to record of a cheque not being paid in, banks can see records of transaction you can't - i cant remember if its because they would have reversed it or because somethings been done as an internal transaction to something (i.e moving to a holding account). cant remember off the top of my head its been a few years since i worked in a bank.

if i where you i'd expect the police to come knocking, either politely or with a battering ram.

i think its showing the essential need for any alt coin that wants to stand the test of time to use a different algorythm than other coins out there.

while i've yet to watch this new piece i did find the last one (i think it was) an embaressment, sometimes i think they pick people like him to share there views/talk about bitcoin in order to do bitcoin a disservice, i mean if you wanted to ruin the image of bitcoin in a subtle way then you start by giving people like amir facetime on tv to make a complete arse out of himself on a serious subject.

lets face it, whoever approached him to talk about it has probably done there research and knows that if you want to make bitcoin look like the terrorists favorite way to launder money, buy drugs, acquire firearms, bypass financial sanctions and attack the man then amir is probably the best person to do that. for that reason and that reason alone the bitcoin community would do itself a great service to distance themselves from him.

i believe asics provide strength to bitcoin because of its large network hasrate to begin with, but with a smaller coin unfortunatly it causes a massive increase in the difficulty and causes problems -  whereby i can image a lot of the smaller hobby miners - whom provide greater security and stability to a new coin - leave.

 i see more stability in a thousand single graphics cards mining away getting a fair slice of the pie than half a dozan guys with asics taking over the whole network.

while i can see a large number of people holding high powered mining rigs on a massive network as a bonus, i cant see how it would be good for a small alt coin, i mean if someone had pointed an asic at a new coin the first day it launched then left with a masive difficulty increase remaining in there wake then the larger number of smaller guys are going to be put off by only getting 1 or 2 coins for 24 hour mining with there cards, given that said alt coin is nowhere near as valuble as bitcoin it leaves very little incentive to actually mine it.

a more decentralised coin is for me, having many many people chipping in, not a few people taking over.

if you want to prevent asics from hopping the pool and making a mess of things then change the algo and in the future should the coin stand the test of time its own brand of asics will come, trying to force the evolution of mining onto something will only ruin it for the majority of people whom you need for the coins survival.

While i do support terracoin i think the issue of someone poining asics at the network and thrus forcing up the difficulty of a reletively new coin shows a major flaw in most alt-coin designs - using the same algorythm as bitcoin, imho any alt coin that wants to stand the test of time and actually be taken seriously is going to need a difference algo - take litecoin as the perfect example, different algo and it's followed the same mining evolution as bitcoin.

First CPU, now GPU - next someone will develope an FPGA and eventually it will probably go ASIC - this is how it should be. it shouldnt run the risk of being killed off in a matter of days because someone pointed a high end mining device at it.

The lesson i think that should be learned is that now ASIC's are out there, if you want a serious alt-coin then dont use the same algo as someone else.

Similar set up to me. you can safely overclock the card tho for more hashes i've got mine at 1075 and i get 650~ mh/s, mine bombs out if i clock it to max but just short of it's fine and its a lot better than stock settings, just make sure you turn the fan speed up .

I'd imagine that it wouldnt be overly difficult per se to carry out the 51% attack, i mean, everyone here is assuming they will just build a massive mining rig and take over the network, although if bitcoin was being targeted to be shut down i'm guessing it would be more than one government.

what would probably happen is all domain names linked to bitcoin, exchanges and mining pools would be turned off, as many servers as possible seized then every government that was aiming to shut it down turns on there own mining rigs and takes control of a lot more than 51%. If bitcoin was to threaten the monetary system then globally i'd be worried about a lot more than just a goverment pool harvesting 51% or more of the hashes.

Of course this would all happen after an official banning and some high profile arrests splashed all over the media to scare people into not doing it, under the pretence that bitcoin is used for buying drugs, building weapons (if they believed that dork who did that talk at the confrence in london i forget his name), and other such things that require money laundering.

Before they carried out a 51% attack they sure as hell would reduce the network hash rate a fair bit using more conventional methods (then probably use the impounded equipment to carry out the attack or fund it with money seized from accounts)
