It totally depends on how much time you can wait. As people told you short term isn't good even I agree to that. If you can wait for 2 years then I can assure you that you will get X2 for your bitcoins.
And also don't worry that you are late the price is just the start of a new era.

For long time investment I think you can invest now as after a pull back to 1100 dollar a New up trend will resume. I agree that you will profit if you are willing to wait, but consider that in 1st quartal of 2016 the bitcoin was around 450$, I already know people who bought and profited a lot till now. My point, you never know how much you'll need to wait. Following the trend will surely help you to choose the right time for an investment, but its open market so it's never sure

I keep reading about the possible ETF SEC approval, but could anyone explain to me what it means? It means exchange traded fund, but there already are bitcoin exchanges in the US right? I'm confused.

ETF does not trade only cryptocurrencies, therefore ETF is not a crypto exchange or FIAT-exchange, so don't confuse online exchanges with ETF. If bitcoin is officially accepted by ETF, if BTC receives regulatory approval from USD ETF, the things for all the bitcoin owners will become interesting
