Re: Vertcoin | Scrypt N | Beat ASICs | Must upgrade wallet due to a bug in OpenSSL

Is it possible some miners were pre-configured for launch day ? private gpu miners ? almost every coin does that and if they say they don't their fucking lying.
Did VTC botnets get fired up ? maybe but that is not what that moron was saying.. he was dramatizing and slandering this coin over normal activity seen on all coins.

tired of stupid noobs crying instamine..
but i have complained on almost every coin when they pull gpu miners etc out of their ass long after the coin was released.. that scammy routine gets old.

short reply from me, the guy who released vertminer.

Yes, i had a GPU miner ready at ~17.00 GMT and i mined with 2x 7950.
At 23.00 or 24.00 GMT i decided to spread this to the IRC channel because no pools or GPU miner was public available.
During the next hours there was a massive community support to compile this for windows (many thanks to Aleks) and to setup the first pools so everyone could mine VTC with a GPU miner.
-> a GPU miner + Pools was available for everyone within 24 hours after coin launch, not days or even weeks later.

And as you can see, with 2x 7950s it was not real possible to make such a hugh amount of coins. Believe it or not, i am not even in the Top10.

I do not know who the other guys or groups are, but i am sure this was no one from the dev team (e.g. i have send some VTC to Bushido because he only had a Laptop to mine...)

I know this statement will not stop the FUD but at least everyone can read it and think about the bullshit from IPO and/or premined coin guys.

Hi guys, I really need your help. So I'm trying to get mine some Vertcoins with my 2 280x. However I constantly get this error. Does someone know what I'm doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

My setup:
2 Asus 280x dc2t
Maximus hero formula VI
Gskill 8GB 1600 cl9
4670K

And this is my bat file:

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1
COLOR 0A

vertminer.exe --scrypt-vert -o stratum+tcp://eu2.bitcrush.info:3444 -u Relaxedsense.1 -p x -v 1 -w 256 -I 13,13 -g 2 --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-powertune -20,-20 --temp-overheat 85
--temp-cutoff 90 --gpu-memclock 1500,1500 --gpu-engine 1000,1000 --thread-concurrency 8193,8193

Error:

please add the red marked

Thanks for your help mate, I got it working. Each card at around 340, quite allright right?

yes, 340 seems to be OK.
you also can try --thread-concurrency 8191,8191

Congratulations! Over 1000 VTC have been pledged towards clean water. Help spread the word and get us to our minimum goal of 1400 Vertcoins! Clean water project almost fully funded (75% complete!) Please upvote, share, and donate to help us reach our goal!

http://vertcoinmarket.com/campaigns/vertcoin-fundraiser-for-the-water-project/
Donate here: VvDTnXrkJT7VovnBdkC9LYN49AcNbJjX2h

The funds are held in ESCROW by Moolah and will be donated to a water project at: http://thewaterproject.org/sponsor-a-water-project.php
The worldcoin water project is here: https://thewaterproject.org/community/profile/brandon-brown

If, at the time of conversion, our funds are greater than or equal to $5k USD, we can underwrite our own project. Otherwise, we will contribute to an existing project. (I'm almost leaning towards keeping the fundraiser open and doing it this way instead, but we'll vote before funds are released).

I've included the email correspondence with the president of thewaterproject here:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/207323716/The-Water-Project-Peter-Chasse-responds

The guys over at /r/worldcoin have said that they found their funds and will be continuing the fundraiser.

I couldn't quite tell if that was a serious question, or you're annoyed I built it and posted a link.

Both. If you want to support, i have no problems with.
But i am also annoyed because it is a alpha and i expect some issues/confusion regarding the --scrypt and --nscrypt options
Some users still use the very first cgminer-vertcoin and with this old miner --scrypt as an options mines only vertcoin (and this behaviour is now changed -> no accepted shares with vertminer-0.5.4pre2 and --scrypt option).
But as this alpha version is now out in the wild you cannot hold it back.
Therefore i had to write this important info.

Also i am still in test regarding some strange behaviour with ultra hot cards and 0 rpm fan (i try to reproduce this error but until now i am not able, i have no such issues).

I decided today was the day I'd figure out how to build vertminer myself on Windows.
Here is a SkyDrive link with vertminer 0.5.4pre2 compiled from the latest source from Bufius' GitHub repo.

http://1drv.ms/1cEsqTZ

It seems to be working ok for me, but this is my first time ever compiling either vertminer or cgminer for that matter.

Also, check out my P2Pool node at http://vtc-us-east.oakagedsoftware.com:9171/  Smiley

I tried this on a 2nd system of mine and it just crashes, but a previous build that I did earlier did seem to work. The only difference I'm aware of is this build was done with both "--enable-scrypt --enable-opencl" versus my first build that just had --enable-scrypt, and this one was stripped using "strip vertminer.exe".

Are you interested in doing the support for this new version i have not released yet (still in test)?
Regarding compiling: just use autogen.sh, it will do the job (autoreconf, configure, build and strip alltogether).

@All: this new version now supports mining nfactor scrypt and normal scrypt

vertminer.exe --scrypt .....   -->  mine normal scrypt coins
vertminer.exe --nscrypt  ....   --> mine nfactor scrypt coins (e.g. vertcoin)

But as always: you can use your known cgminer .conf for mining normal scrypt coins BUT THIS WILL NOT WORK WITH VERTCOIN (the other way is fine -> use vertcoin config for normal scrypt coins).
For vertcoin, you have to use other (vertcoin, e.g. TC) settings and i am still playing around with something so this version is ALPHA and USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

If you want this coin to succeed, there is a simple solution:

Provide a fork of cgminer, which can mine scrypt (--scrypt) and adaptive n-factor scrypt (--nscrypt). And provide binaries.

This coin needs more hashing power, but it is still very complicated to compile the vertminer for linux. Although I would call myself an advanced user, it still took me hours. No increasing hashing power = no rise in price.

which can mine scrypt (--scrypt) and adaptive n-factor scrypt (--nscrypt)

This what i prepare now...
And i really know this will lead to a lot of issues with users just copying their cgminer config and crying why this does not work with --nscrypt

Binaries will come afterwards. But a compilation should really not take hours (ok, if everything is prepared)

Pandacoin looks better than Altcoin, but that premine.. Also nothing really new compared to vert. They have the backup of Woolong apparently though. We'll see.

im pretty scared right now, i left doge and now its skyrocketing, joined vert and now its tanking, and in 3 days there will be a vertclone with better backing. i dont know what needs to be done

If you think a big anonymous investor calling himself "Wolong" and manipulating prices is a better backing then leave Vertcoin too...

be less bm, considering how you have 15 posts youre probably new to this too, im stivking with vertcoin, i just dont kno what will happen to this market.

By the way, great to see such backing for the projects on vertcoinmarket.com - I only mentioned http://vertcoinmarket.com/campaigns/vertcoin-logo-refinement-corporate-identity-guide/ a few hours ago and we're nearly at the funding target already - great stuff.

Plenty more good projects to back too, go and take a look at vertcoinmarket.com (the official Vertcoin project crowdfunding site) if you haven't already.

Lets create a new Logo!
Just filled up the remaining VTC

And lets also create the Press releases.
I filled up the remaining VTC too

I send some VTC to the African Water project too.
Please concentrate on this project now  Smiley

I was on vertminer 0.5.3 from the start. Also it is not related to fixed fan because my 280X had fan set to something like 60-90 and they had the same problem.

Sorry, i was not exact enough.
From my understanding you use the fan settings from the miner even if fixed or within a defined range, correct?

With 0.5.3 i patched the miner with a ADL6 patch for R9 cards from the litecoin forum.
There are no known issues with this patch, it does only prevent a system crash after exiting the miner when a R9 290/290X is used.
I will check if there is a relation but without a proper use case how to provoke this issue it will be hard to find.

It is always a bad idea to use hardware control from within a piece of software (not only related to the miner).
Because if the SW crashes your hardware is not safe (crash = undefined state). Also there can be (unkown) SW errors.
Using the BIOS is safe but normally also louder.

I'm pretty sure mining for Vertcoin just ruined my TRI-X 290X.

What happened? Im just about to buy those.

Decided to try and mine Vertcoin, within 3 minutes of using the settings on page 1 my rig crashed. Now it locks up and crashes indefinitely when trying to mine any altcoin. I had zero problems using cgminer to mine other coins for three weeks straight.

Also, just tried to play a game (BF3) to test it, and the whole rig crashes immediately.

Sounds like it might have heated to the point of warping components or messing up the thermal grease.

NOT a good sign - someone's gotta fix the miner.

Please feel free to do so, source is available on github.
I would start with a switch like "--do-not-warp-my-hardware"

I think about releasing a new version with max GPU 400MHz, max MEM 600 MHz, max Intensity 7 and Fan always at 100%.
Everything else must be forced with "--force-because-i-know-what-i-do"

i can only guess.

Are the cards overclocked? Do you use the auto-fan feature of the miner?

FyI: the codebase of vertminer is nearly the same as with cgminer-3.7.2 but the opencl kernel is tweaked -> the cards are pushed harder
My 7950s run since > 1 week without any problem (only yesterday i had to restart because here we had a 2 second power loss)

Not overclocked much, stock mem on the 7950 (1250MHz) and 1020 MHz engine. They are undervolted to 1.081V, but had no issues at all on these settings using normal cgminer. No auto-fan, 85% fixed fan, 60 degrees. Note I had the same issue on R9 280X, different rig (different PSU brand, different motherboard etc). I've been running those 280X without touching it and without any problems on cgminer.

Hm, the settings look safe. My 7950s are at 1000/1500 with 1.012V (at 80°C with BIOS Fan control)

The only relation to the 0 RPM i can see is with the fixed Fan.
Did this happen also before with vertminer < 0.5.2? Or only now with vertminer-0.5.3?

Could one of the developers please address this issue: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=416572.msg4971799#msg4971799
There have been several people in that thread that responded they had the same issue. I am worried that this will kill my cards. I have had this problem after a day of mining VTC on two separate rigs (different cards too, 7950 and 280X).

Short recap of the issue:
After mining VTC for some time, some cards start showing 511 C and 0 RPM in Vertminer, are not hashing, and get very hot. Even after coldreboot, the problem does not go away, and also appears in normal cgminer (which previously never exhibited this issue). It seems it is necessary to turn off and wait some time before it starts working again. I've never had this problem with the normal cgminer. On some of my 7950s, after this issue occured, I never reached back the same hashrate as before (about 50KH/s lower in normal cgminer).

Vertminer 0.5.3.

I also noticed that when I use I13, TC8193 on my 280X (the I13 is crucial), I will get 1 or 2 HW errors when I start vertminer, but no (or not many) more after that. I am wondering if this could be related. However at I12 I cannot get more than around 270 KH/s, while I get 360 on I13.

i can only guess.

Are the cards overclocked? Do you use the auto-fan feature of the miner?

Bufius,

Are you sure the card is OK? I've got Sapphire R9 290s (non-X), the standard reference design (with the hairdryer-like noisy fan).
With the engine @ 947 and mem @ 1500 and Intensity 18 my cards get 76C. Fan runs at 75%.

Higher intensities seem to crash the card at some point, as does a higher clock. Just FYI. I find 93C at 700 wit I14 a bit suspicious.
Edit: Ok, temp was before you fixed the paste problem, but still the crashing is odd. I *can* run the cards at 1000 clock, but they crash after hours/days then. At 85C btw.

I am sure the card is not really Ok, at least the custom cooler is not the best as it seems.
And the stock BIOS has really low voltages, this is the main cause of the voltage based crashes.
But i will apply again (even thinner) new compound. Perhaps i applied too much.

But the conclusion is the same: the mining application kicks 100% constant load to the card and this is much more than e.g. normal games and even more than furmark (i could not believer this before my own testings).

A word from my side about crashing miner and hardware

Since some days i have a VTX3D R9 290 X-Edition card and there were and are issues with miner crashes and driver recoveries at stock clocks.

BUT: i know why this happens!

1) after i got the card and put it into my win 7 PC this thing was very very hot. even at 700 MHz i had 93°C with Intensity 14. Higher intensity: crash
-> issue fixed: the original applied heat compound was crap. air gaps inside and some of the chip was not covered. Now with new heat compound it is much better than before.

2) after this heat compound thing i tried higher clock rates.
max stock 975 MHz and Intensity 15: crash after a few seconds. With Intensity 14 crash after <1 minute.
With 900 MHz: really hot but working, even with Intensity 20.
Test with furmark: with 975 MHz and max settings: no problems, works fine for > 5 minutes (just a short test performed)

Then i started HWInfo and checked the Voltages: with Furmark, the GPU voltage is at min somewhere at 0.98xV @ 975MHz.
With vertminer voltage is at 0.94xV @ 900MHz. Also the temps are not as high with furmark @ stock than with vertminer and lower clocks.

-> my conclusion:
for GPU testing purposes, furmark is a toy. If you want to perform real testing, use vertminer. The opencl kicks the GPU to the max and so everything else (regulators, memory) is used extensive.
And if the cards stock voltages are good enough to play games, this does not mean you can use the card with the same clocks for mining.

--> final word
If you encounter crashes, lower your clocks or increase the voltages! And a good cooling is a must!
The latest opencl kernel for the vertminer is even more optimized than the existing cgminer scrypt kernel. You can try to use the latest vertminer kernel also with scrypt cgminer (but needs some changes to work).
I am sure you will see also some sudden crashes when your card is at its limit...
