Ok...so I wasn't reading the output of JtR correctly. I purposely added a dummy password to the script I used to come up with the wordlist and that's when I realized I come close enough. So I'm back to that stage on trying to remember what I based my password on...grrrrrr

I guess 0.9.0 didn't work either.

Can you dump your wallet with pywallet?
I still need to try that. I did do it but it may not be a proper test as the machine I put it on had it at one point. I do have a clean laptop I can put it but I haven't had a chance yet.

As for pywallet --dump, I can also try that a bit later.

I'll give that python command a go at lunch time.

This was the command I used in Debian to get JtR:
git clone -b bleeding-jumbo git://github.com/magnumripper/JohnTheRipper JohnTheRipper

I have multiple copies of the wallet.dat. All are recent as I didn't want to mess with the original file other attempting to unlock it. What I don't have is an older version sitting around (wish I did).

This is what I'm getting:

Quote
terry@CrackIt-WS:~$ sudo python pywallet.py --recover --recov_device /home/terry/wallet.dat --recov_size 2Mio --recov_outputdir /home/terry/fxd
Enter the passphrase for the wallet that will contain all the recovered keys: **********

Enter the possible passphrases used in your deleted wallets.
Don't forget that more passphrases = more time to test the possibilities.
Write one passphrase per line and end with an empty line.
Possible passphrase: **********
Possible passphrase:

Starting recovery.

Read 0.0 Go in 0.0 minutes

Found 1 possible wallets
Found 234 possible encrypted keys
Found 0 possible unencrypted keys

Possible wallet #1
    with passphrase #1

Private keys not decrypted: 234
Trying all the remaining possibilities (234) might take up to 0 minutes.
Do you want to test them? (y/n): y

Private keys not decrypted: 234
Try another password, check the size of your partition or seek help
The wallet is encrypted and the passphrase is correct

Importing:

The new wallet /home/terry/fxd/recovered_wallet_1411437903.dat contains the 0 recovered key
To me it seems like it's accepting the password but the private keys won't take them. Or am I reading this wrong??

So I'm looking at the command pywallet.py --recover and it looks like it requires a size option be set. How do you what number to put in there? The rest of the command, seems easy enough.

I extracted the hash from the wallet
Huh There is no hashed password stored in the wallet to extract. What exactly did you do?
I ran bitcoin2john.py command that came with John the Ripper.

This means that JtR was able to decrypt the mkey (and verify that the padding bytes were correct, which makes it extremely likely that the password was correct). JtR doesn't try to actually decrypt any private keys to check them against the stored public keys.

If the first private key, or its associated public key, is corrupted, this will happen (although that seems unlikely to me...). If this is the case, `pywallet.py --recover` can help.

CDNinATL, can you let us know how this turns out? I'm personally interested...

Also, does your password contain any non-ASCII characters (any characters not list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASCII#ASCII_printable_code_chart)?
No. Capital and lower case letters, numbers and the tilde key. I wasn't sure if the tilde was the issue but I was able to encrypt a blank wallet and then successfully change the password.

I'll try the pywallet thing later. Right now I'm up against washing machine and a bearing that doesn't want to be replaced!

I can. I'll give it a go on my main computer.

Bitcoin Core won't take my passphrase
by

So about 6 months ago I decided to encrypt my BTC wallet (good thing). Set the password and all that. Since then I upgraded from 0.9.0 core to the latest 9.2.1. Now my wallet won't accept my passphrase. I wasn't exactly sure on password so I extracted the hash from the wallet and ran John the Ripper in a Debian VM and verified the passphrase. The wallet itself is on my Windows 2012 server (not sure if that's relevant or not). Every time I try to reset the passphrase or send my coin to my Armory wallet (either will do), it just keeps telling me that the passprase is incorrect.

So far I've ran -upgradewallet, -rescan and -salvagewallet switches on it but none of them are letting me access my coin.

I guess next up will be the fixwallet.py inside of my linux vm and see if that makes any difference but I've never used it before. Any other suggestions would be awesome!!

The wallet was unable to download Huh

I was able to find the wallet, 0.9 beta but I won't start the sync. Complains about no block source available. I saw a thread on another site and it sounds like they're in the midst of moving the domain to another host. Maybe that's affecting the syncing but that's just a guess.

I have to say this was a pool that I just enjoyed using. But having a bunch of coins stuck on there is irritating. He could at least hand it/sell it over to someone who has the inclination to fix what's broke and get it back going.

Now to search where else I can I mine the variety he had.

I like my two S3's... I also like my 4 S1's.  F ROI I mine for mining.

Expensive hobby

Not really, spend more on golf I do.
Have to agree. Golf has cost me more $$$ than any of my mining!  Tongue

Just got mine today from China. Took me half the time to set it up compared to my S1. What actually took me some time, was remember the path to the config file so I could look at the settings if I decide to overclock.  Grin

But all is good. It's running quite nicely!

I ordered 3 of these from him. I just took a close look at them. 2 of them have bent pins but nothing major and I should be able to straighten them. I need to power them up but I think one the fans maybe toast as it doesn't spin real well but that's a pretty cheap part to replace. All of the chips themselves look fine to me though.

My problem isn't the bent pins or a possible fan issue. It was a total lack of communication after I sent him the btc. I sent him a couple of PM's plus posted in his for sale thread. There were a couple of others complaining about that too. I had no idea if they had been sent or not until I got an email from UPS giving me the delivery date and that it was from Colorado. All I wanted was a PM saying he got the bitcoin and let me know when he was going to ship them. I don't that's expecting too much.

I still need to get my hands on a controller board though to verify that work.

Just what it says. I'm looking for a Bitfury Controller Board. Preferably version 2. I can order it from China but I'd like to avoid such high costs of shipping. Anyways, let me know the cost in BTC. THANKS!

So I thought I'd post my experiences after having my first S1 up and running for just over 24 hours. I'm used of dealing with various OS's due to my work (deskside support lead for a major cable TV network). I deal with Macs, Windows and even the odd linux box. Which is good since I have mostly PC's at home and 1 mac and and my new Antminer running linux.  Tongue

Open it up, get it hooked up to the new PSU I ordered. No issues there. Fire it up. Use my laptop to connect to it via IP after putting it into the same subnet. Reconfigure the IP settings of the miner and put into the proper range for my home network. Then turn it to DHCP and statically assign it in my router. This way as I add new devices, I can't screw up and assign the same IP and it will always get the same IP from the router.  Grin

Someone a couple of pages ago mentioned a stock speed of 160 GH/S. I was getting 140 GH/S after about 10 minutes after configuring my mining pool (eligius). Start messing with OCing and cooling. Add a second fan. One good thing about being a computer tech...always have extra parts around!!  Cool Late last night, finally get it going to 200 GH/S and holding. Go to bed. Wake up today. Still going. Get to work and check. No good. Hash rate has dropped big time. Remote into my home server and SSH into the device and order a reboot. It comes back to a nicely tuned 200 GH/S. Start to have hashing rate issues again in the afternoon but don't have enough time to really mess with it until I get home.

I have the device in my basement, in my storage room beside my server. Ambient temps in the room were around 79F. Get the AC going a bit more and put a fan to blow cooler air from the hallway towards the miner. Room temp now down to 74F. Temps on the miner are 45/43C with them being overclocked 387 freq. I'm getting right around 190 GH/s. It should be a bit higher but it's also drawing about 375 watts according my watt meter. Not sure if this had anything to do with it either way but I plugged it into a 500 watt UPS just in case I was having noise on my outlet. The only other thing plugged into the UPS is my cable modem (got to keep my network up and running!) and I'm still running around 390 watts so I don't think I should be seeing a drain on the battery.

Anyways, I'll have to keep an eye on it's hash rate. I'm still not convinced I have the issues all quite solved but I should know by tomorrow afternoon. High tomorrow is 86F here in Atlanta.

A quick update. UPS ran out of juice. Had to move the miner to an outlet on the UPS that isn't part of it's battery backup. But I still get the power line conditioning. Everything is back up and running. I'm mining back to 196 GH/s. Nice...
500 watts is cutting it really tight with an overclock on a 500 watt UPS
Without knowing the psu specs I might say it's pushing the psu to the limit and it's overheating on you.

I don't think the miners are the real issue since mine runs hotter and I haven't had any issues like you described yet.*
edited to add I blew up a cheapy 500 watt psu attempting to run both blades at stock. It ran the one fine.
As soon as both blades started to mine, the psu melted down..
*different ants run differently though too..
Yeah..While it's hooked up through the UPS, it's not on the battery part of it. But the good news is that I've been mining now for 24 hours without any other issues. Speeds has been constant at right around 195 GH/s. So I'm quite happy now.
