Re: Helium miners

I've seen outdoor enclosures for some of the popular helium miners, I suggest you purchase one of those if you want to keep it outdoors.
Aside from that, Rokland makes some nice, low-loss antenna cables that will help out if you want to keep it inside.  They make a 10' cable that has only a 0.4 DBi loss, and a 16' cable with a 0.6 DBi loss.  10-15 feet (~3-5m) should be sufficient for you to keep your miner inside and the antenna outside - which would solve both of your problems.  Look for MPD-400 or higher cables to stay low-loss.

MPD-400 or LMR-400 is better ? I've been advised to use LMR-400, wondering which is better now after your comment. Fairly new to helium miners, any advice is appreciated greatly.

I'm unsure of the difference.  The link above shows estimated signal loss on all their cables.

Re: Mininig with Air Conditioner ???

I have 4 pcs mining rigs. Each of them has 12 GPUs RX570 4GB.
Total 48 GPU. I want to use air conditioner for cooling.
What should I do ? is it safe to use air conditioner ?

cold air and hot air in the same room is a problem ?

Is cold air from your AC safe for your desktop pc?  Yes, it's absolutely safe to have cold/hot air in the same room.

General rule of thumb is that your AC unit should be at least as many watts as your rigs.  So if you're doing Eth with those 570s, that's roughly 80w x 48 = 3840w.  Add in some overhead for the CPUs, and make certain that your cooling is redundant because at some point one of your AC units will go down.

Rather than going through the mess that it will be to get the older style miner, I suggest that you instead go for a Radeon 6800 or 6800 XT.  They will be roughly the same performance of an original 3060/3070 without having to verify every single model number when you purchase it.  Also, you can buy them new for the price of a used 3060/3070.

Is this project dead now?  Latest release was in February, I see a lot of unresolved issues on the git, and it won't launch bfgminer for me either.

ETC will soon have a dag that fits 4gb...we are talking days away. just over a week.  Then this card can mine ETC no isssue.

Perhaps, but the price of an 8gb vs a 4gb card is about the same.  May as well do an exchange now (if OP still can).

Had the same issue with a 4gb 5500 XT.  It doesn't work to mine ETH due to the DAG file being to large.  You need 6-8gb in order to mine ETH.  Return the card (if you can) and exchange for an 8gb variant, or mine some other currency that doesn't have a DAG file.

The S1 and S3 had a setting in one of the config files where you could set a goal temp for the fans.  Any idea where the S5 might store that setting?  I figure if I can raise the goal temp a bit, I can make them a smidge quieter.
I don't, sorry.
Thanks.  I managed to quiet it down by just swapping out the fan for two b-Gear 120mm fans in a push-pull configuration.  Runs at about 71C in a 75F ambient, but at least it keeps the wife happy.

Ok 1 Dumbass question. A Newbie to the Britain S3+ but not a newbie to it.

Can each side of the miner be powered from separate PSU's?

Have to say mine arrived today and hashing away nicely! 😁

Mick

No

More than likely it can as the power is only shared over the controller board and its unlikely to be anything noteworthy.
Yes, it can.  Bitmain confirmed that at some point.  The controller board is actually only powered by one side, not the other.

Any plans to update this guide (or create a new one) for the S1 upgrade kits?

I missed in buried in this thread somewhere but what is to be gained by updating the version of cgminer in these?

Not a ton, but here's the list that I know of.
  • Security
  • More responsive UI

Like has been already said, don't bother.  You'll spend more on power than you'll earn, and even if your power is free, you'll only earn a fraction of a penny a day, which won't even pay for the cost of the machine when the hardware fails early due to being used a lot.

Interestingly enough, I just got a new EVGA 1200 P2 yesterday and found out that it came with a jumper clip in the box.  I was pretty surprised by it, and double-checked my last box of it - no jumper.  It looks like they've added this to their packaging recently.

Anyone have experience with fan replacement on their S3?  I have "free" power in my apartment, making the location attractive to use, but my wife is not happy with the amount of noise generated by my pair of S3's.

I'm having trouble locating actual specs on the stock fans in order to find an equivalent (but quieter) replacement.
You'll be hard-pressed to find many fans that make less noise than the S3s and still keep it cool enough.  You might try putting something in front of them to buffer the noise.  Maybe a shelf with a rug hanging off to absorb noise.  Just be careful to not block airflow.

any ideas if updating my S3 would improve my GH/s vs watts?...

My current measurements are:

Freq   Gh/s   Watts
*********************

100   200   166

150   300   250

200   400   336

218.75   427   350

225   450   389

250   500   450

The watts per GH/s all seems a little on the high side.

l purchased my S3 secondhand and believe it's a first generation model
and has never been updated...  also are there any thoughts about undervolting
the S3. l note from the BM1382 datasheet reducing supply volts by just 0.05v reduces
consumption by 25%+ without affecting the hash rate.

Are your measurements from the wall?  If so, they seem within tolerance, assuming you have 90% efficient PSU.

Freq      Gh/s   Watts   Expected from wall (Gh/s*.78*1.1)
************************************************
100      200   166      171.6
150      300   250      257.4
200      400   336      343.2
218.75   427   350      366.366
225      450   389      386.1
250      500   450      429

ok guys thanks for the help,

so almost everyone who uses atx powersupply's on any kind of miner is voiding his warrenty?
or can some brands be used for this?
and what would be the way to go, some kind of offical switch?

the evga 1300 watt miner supplies a switch

the manual
http://www.evga.com/support/manuals/files/120-G2-1300.pdf
The PDF isn't loading for me right now, so I can't quite confirm this, but I've never seen a PSU that comes with the kind of switch you need.  Any good PSU will come with a switch next to the power connector, however, as means of a secondary power-off.  The PSU still won't come on unless you cross the green to the ground somehow.  There are, however, quite a lot of options for doing this (aside from paperclips).

I don't think it matters if you are or are not technically voiding your warranty.  Unless you volunteer the information, they have no way of verifying.  Like was said already, just say you were using it on some high-end video cards.  Also, based off this thread, don't use that brand.

Don't think B9 has already shipped. My order still showing unshipped + no tracking #

Mine just shipped about 15 min ago.  Bitmain shows it as being ordered on 2014-09-15 14:30.

Sorry about the off topic but:  Perplexed rather than paranoid, something odd has occurred since checking the UPS shipping status of my S3+'s from China.  I have two drives in this system both new this year, a 2TB main drive and a 3TB backup.  Upon getting notification that the units were shipped I checked the UPS tracking and saw the status but about that time one of my hard drives started making sounds as if moving data to the inner area of the drive and that read arm was loud in its snapping movement.  It's been happening every once in a while since.  Meanwhile I've downloaded SeaTools and fast check the drives and both are okay and now doing a long drive test.  So, NSA or China screwing with my system?
I'd have to hear the noise to be sure, but usually when a drive makes any loud snapping noises, it's having trouble reading and is failing.  You can monitor it real-time though using Task Manager > Performance > Resource Monitor.

Next time, just buy some normal switches or do what I did.

I bought a few of these guys and combined them with some wire splicers to cross the green to the ground.  Works like a charm.
