Re: A remote Bitcoin hacker house?

wow! that place looks so amazing and i think its a very wonderful place to stay in
thank you for the share.
I'd love to have a house like that and the view is incredible. It's a nice place to spend some time especially if you're a writer, but in case something happens like an accident it would be very difficult to get help in such a remote location. Buying groceries could also be a pain...

Really nice place to zone out at for long periods of time, most likely a heaven for people that want to feel free some the busy world, yea being in a remote location you have to be ready for all situations mostly accidents and potential risk .

The particular location is very close to Lerwick, so I would not be too concerned..

Bitcoiners interested in this subject, might also be interested in forvik.com.

Also: http://sovereignshetland.com/

Forvikcoin: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=763462.0 (Just learned about this, seems like another shitcoin, but an interesting idea nontheless.. : dead project)

At the very least he's actually attempting to make a change. If it will ever go anywhere is another matter, Stuart Hill seems to be quite the character, but I guess not many of us would be willing to sacrifice everything to do what he's doing.

Re: A remote Bitcoin HQ?

What exactly do you mean with "bitcoin HQ" are thinking about some kinda bitcoin fueled resort or are we talking about mining? The house and place is nice indeed, but what does it have to do with bitcoins?

Only the imagination sets the limits, I think I explained the main idea well in the original post.

Mainly it would be a peaceful quiet place were bitcoiners could come for a longer or shorter stay, to work with their interests related to bitcoin/crypto (primarily coding), and to also discuss with likeminded people and posibly form friendships. It could be a place where a startup teams could come for bootstrapping. And of course if the location was suitable, mining could be done. But these days mining needs to be more specialized, so that was not what I had i mind primarily.

Also, it would be a place of serenity, no noise, pollution or stress. You'd simply concentrate on coding, and using nature (go for walks, go along the shoreline) as you sett fit.

The purpose with the thread was to gauge the interest for the concept. It's just at an idea stage.

Why is a "Bitcoin HQ" needed?

Isn't the whole point of bitcoin that it is decentralized with no headquarters that ca n be raided, burned down, hacked, etc.?

Also, who would fund this?

You could call it something else if you wanted, Bitcoin Retreat, or any other name. It's not indended to promote centralization.

There are many 'hacker houses' around the world, and this would just be another one.

It could be privately funded or crowdfunded.

I would expect that satellite internet service would work fine. Just to clarify, it's 5-15 Celsius for Shetland Islands, I'm sure...

Is internet sattelite a good alternative for everyday usage, is not costs quite high, bandwidth low and latency high?

Perhaps some arrangement with getting internet from Lerwick would be possible, I assume they would have reasonable fast
internet there. Perhaps stretching a sea cable? (Would not like to think of the costs involved however..)

What I would give for a week or two in that place right now....

What about Isle of Man? Also relatively remove, better infrastructure (internet, commercial, transport, airport, ferries) yet still possible to find a place which is far away from the commercial centers on the island.

And importantly, bitcoin friendly last time I checked.

I'm aware of Isle of Man (edit: Seems like property prices there are very high compared to Shetland), I've never been there actually. What attracted me to the Shetland property was complete peace and quiet. No noise around. If you do not want to see anyone for 2 weeks, you don't have to, apart from other people in the building of course. I was thinking of a place that would attract more of the silent seeking types in general.

While some enjoy the busy cities, others enjoy silence and peace.

For anyone doing technical work, be it coding, translating, writing or similar, peace and quiet is essential.

I came accross this property, which is an old school on Shetland.
http://www.d-s-r.co.uk/property/old-schoolhouse1.htm

Whenever you needed to clear your head, you could go for long trips, no noisy neighbours, railways,
planes or boats, only fresh sea air and big fields.

I was thinking, if there was such a remote Bitcoin HQ, then it would be possible to go there for a longer
or shorter time, and it would really be possible to concentrate 100% on your work, and also to relax
and recharge your 'batteries'.

The temperatures on Shetland range from 5-15 Celcius most of the year, and I would think there's little
or no insects. Not sure if the internet connection would be fast, or even possible, but I think this is
an interesting idea.

Of course there would need to be some usable internet connection. Svalbard could be another alternative (very fast internet..),
but it's much colder there, and not everybody is happy with freezing temperatures.

Going to such a place like the property shown above would essentially free you from all stress factors from city
life.

And it could also be a place to make new friendships with other bitcoiners.

I could imagine it would be a nice place for a startup team to go for lengthy 'deep' coding sessions too. There would simply be no distractions..

Of course the logistics is somewhat more difficult, but with good planning it should be doable, there's a local
shop, and only a 5 minute ferry trip to Lerwick (capital of Shetland Islands).

Also, getting to Shetland might not be very easy/cheap for everyone.

But I find the concept of a bitcoin HQ intriguing, and I'm sure there's plenty of places in the world where something like this could be set up.

I thought I would share this idea with other bitcoiners and see what the responses were.

Edit: Changed the title to avoid further confusion. Original title was "A remote Bitcoin HQ?"

Re: political parties pay for fake supporters

Morally speaking, this is wrong on many levels:

1. The political parties are acting dishonest, giving the impression that a crowd is supporting them.
2. The rent a crowd company is running a very questionable service.
3. The people actually whoring themselves out to pretend to be supporters, but which only do it for money.

The only good thing I can see is that the people are not forced to show support. As we know, in some countries, you have no choice but to show support when asked..

But who should be surprised, when was politics ever honest?

Afaik, you can run bitcoin-core in both normal and testnet mode on the same server without issues. Testnet had it's own directory within the ~/.bitcon directory that's called ~/.bitcoin/testnet3 (for 0.10.0) You might want to specify a config file for testnet, if you use a file other than the standard config, see "-conf"-flag.

Some brute CLI solutions:

Generate commands for moving all privkeys to another electrum wallet:
Code:
echo walletpassword | python electrum dumpprivkeys 2>/dev/null | grep -v WARNING | grep -v Exposing | grep -v "In particular" | grep \" |cut -d "\"" -f2 | xargs -L 1 echo python electrum importprivkey

Generate code for inserting all electrum wallet privkeys to bitcoind:
Code:
echo walletpassword | python electrum dumpprivkeys 2>/dev/null | grep -v WARNING | grep -v Exposing | grep -v "In particular" | grep \" |cut -d "\"" -f2 | xargs -L 1 echo bitcoin-cli importprivkey | awk '{print  false $0" false &&"}' | xargs | sed 's/.\{2\}$//'

Run commands from the electrum directory, and when done, simply copy the output and paste it in another terminal window. Please ensure, you're sitting in the relevant directory for electrum

It's not too many years ago Sweden suffered another major financial scam:
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aqZC29HC0rns

so this has nothing to do with the current crisis

Correct, however it goes to prove that with all the regulation and oversight that exists, even in countries with little corruption, there's no guarantee for customers not losing out.

Reliable domain name registrars that accept btc outside US
by

on 09/06/2015, 11:09:03 UTC
As topic says, what are some reliable domain name registrars that accept bitcoins, and which are Europe based?

If you can vouch for a certain registrar and have a long term successfull interaction with them, that would be interesting to learn about. It seems like a few of the bitcoin registrars that have popped up are unreliable.

Hi mate,

you should be patient. This part of the forum is a bit difficult to be visible in. I think it would also be a good idea to be able to link to a project or two of yours, perhaps even one of your NSFW-projects, but with a good warning. Most people easily click on a link, but won't take the hassle to send you a pm to get to see some of the work you've done.

Once you've got your first cryptocurrency project it will roll from there. Another idea could be to look around for people searching for help associated with your skillset and pm them directly.

Good luck!

Check out the 5.99usd/month alternative, they accept btc, very good host and well connected, 1gbit network and 1tb bandwidth. Hosted in the netherlands. I can recommend these. Very responsive support.

Hello all,
I'm looking for a VPS
Specs should be 1GB RAM, 1CPU, HDD can be small (not necessary SSD),
bandwidth unlimited, or at least 200GB/month, 100mbit is enough,
If you have good offer for me please write to this thread or send me a PM.
Thank you.

Re: [SOLVED] Command 'history' gives error.
by

on 12/05/2015, 09:26:57 UTC
Anyway, as I wanted to use 2.1.1, the simple fix for this issue is as follows:

edit Electrum-2.1.1/lib/commands.py

Find line in def history saying:

Code:
tx_hash, conf, is_mine, value, fee, balance, timestamp = item

switch it with

Code:
tx_hash, conf, value, timestamp, balance = item

Edit: Diffed against released version, so this should be the correct fix.

[SOLVED] Command 'history' gives error.
by
Cryptowatch.com
on 11/05/2015, 03:55:58 UTC
Version: Electrum 2.1.1

According to 'python electrum help history': Returns the transaction history of your wallet

However:

'python electrum history' gives:

Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "electrum", line 165, in run_command
    result = func(*args[1:])
File "/path/electrum/Electrum-2.1.1/lib/commands.py", line 346, in history
tx_hash, conf, is_mine, value, fee, balance, timestamp = item
ValueError: need more than 5 values to unpack

Anyone familiar with this?

Electrum related questions (SSL and PGP)

Downloading electrum source and signature from https://electrum.org/#download:

https://download.electrum.org/Electrum-2.1.1.tar.gz
https://download.electrum.org/Electrum-2.1.1.tar.gz.asc

Checking site with ssllabs:
https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=electrum.org

The site scores 80/100 on Key Exchange. Is the below 'WEAK' entries antyhing at all to be concerned about?

Code:
Cipher Suites (SSL 3+ suites in server-preferred order; deprecated and SSL 2 suites always at the end)
TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (0xc030)   ECDH 256 bits (eq. 3072 bits RSA)   FS 256
TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA384 (0xc028)   ECDH 256 bits (eq. 3072 bits RSA)   FS 256
TLS_ECDHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA (0xc014)   ECDH 256 bits (eq. 3072 bits RSA)   FS 256
TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_GCM_SHA384 (0x9f)   DH 1024 bits (p: 128, g: 128, Ys: 128)   FS   WEAK 256
TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA256 (0x6b)   DH 1024 bits (p: 128, g: 128, Ys: 128)   FS   WEAK 256
TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA (0x39)   DH 1024 bits (p: 128, g: 128, Ys: 128)   FS   WEAK 256

The only handshake simulation which had a match was:

Code:
OpenSSL 0.9.8y TLS 1.0 TLS_DHE_RSA_WITH_AES_256_CBC_SHA (0x39)   FS 256

But that's an old OpenSSL version.

Further, I found ThomasV's pubkey here:

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/spesmilo/electrum/master/pubkeys/ThomasV.asc
http://pgp.surfnet.nl:11371/pks/lookup?op=get&search=0x2BD5824B7F9470E6

But as you can see, those are different, why?
