Posting for a friend who's looking to start selling his farm fresh meats for Bitcoin:

100% farm fresh organic beef for sale for Bitcoin. No hormones used, grass fed and grass finished. Can meet orders of almost any size and ships in a few days. Currently only shipping in the USA since this is a test of how popular this might be and looking to expand to other countries (if the law and practicality allow).

If interested, you can email me here and I'll forward the message to him or (for quicker service or questions) you can contact him directly at abeefyguy [at] cajuntechie [dot] org

Problem starting Electrum after install from source on Ubuntu 15.10

I've just downloaded and installed the latest version of Electrum from source on Ubuntu 15.10. During the steps to get things setup, I got no errors at all and everything seems to have gone well. Electrum was installed in /usr/local/bin

When I start Electrum from the terminal, I get the following errors and Electrum does not start.

anthony@Third-Earth:~/.electrum$ /usr/local/bin/electrum

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I'm missing or what might not be working?

How could Bitcoin fit into a socially democractic political system?
by

As someone who strongly supports a Socially Democratic form of government, I've been trying to figure out how Bitcoin would fit in with that political and economic model.  Is there anyone who lives in a country that has a Social Democrat type of system here who might give me some insight? I know I'm being pretty vague but I guess I'm asking "could/does Bitcoin still have the freeing power in a social democracy as it does in the current US system?"

Question about "send" addresses
by
Cypherpunk38
on 27/09/2015, 02:10:46 UTC
Hello Everyone,

I have all my bitcoins in a single wallet. I need to send someone bitcoins each week but I don't want them to know it's the same person sending them. Without literally shuffling bitcoins to other places, is there a way I can change what address each send comes from? Specifically, I'm using  Electrum but I'm open to change if it can't be done there.

Thanks!

round off the keys corners, make the numpad a different colour.overall just add some colour to the interface if you can, itll make it look extremely better  Cheesy

All very excellent ideas! I especially like the rounded corners. I'm going to play with all of those now.

Thanks!!

Opinions needed on the BitVendor user interface
by

on 21/09/2015, 22:31:38 UTC
Hey Everyone,

I've decided to start working on the BitVendor Mobile Vendor Point of Sale system again after over  year of letting it languish. I'm in the process of redesigning the user interface and would like your opinions and input. Basically, I'm trying to design the UI so that it is as close to a traditional POS system as possible so users who are used to operating regular cash registers won't have to relearn a whole new system.

This http://imgur.com/UyeBk6l is what I have so far. Anyone have any feedback on how to make it better or more usable?

Re: How can we address wallet security on mobile devices?
by
Cypherpunk38
on 08/08/2015, 17:48:51 UTC
You can use iOS, as it is a walled garden, as people say, and it is secure enough for small quantities. You can also use an unrooted Android... same thing, secure enough for small quantities. One can also argue that a rooted Android and an advanced user is a secure combination (something more questionable).

I think current mobile OS's have enough security for mobile wallets. They're made to have just some change, after all. We can address problems by having penetration testing on software releases and continuous support/updates/teams making bug fixes... which we already have.

Don't forget most problems are between the keyboard and the chair, not the keyboard and the monitor Wink

Good points. I guess the ultimate answer really is just don't store large amounts of money on your mobile for long periods of time. Plan your spending and only transfer the amounts you need right now to your mobile wallet. It makes sense plus it has the added benefit of teaching people to plan their purchasing.

There's no doubt about it, people want to use Bitcoin on their mobile devices and, in such a connected world, there's no particular reason that mobile woudn't be the next frontier for Bitcoin. But mobile security is a pretty scary place.  So my question is pretty simple:

In your opinion, what is the safest way to run a Bitcoin wallet on a mobile device? I don't mean a watch-only wallet, I mean a fully functional wallet.  Let's assume for this discussion that "don't" and "convince the OS makers to make security better" aren't valid answers since those don't address the need right now.

Most folks are not concerned about security until they have a problem. The safest but still convenient way to use bitcoin on Android are Mycelium wallet using Trezor to hold your private keys. Yes, you have to sign each payment with the Trezor but it is not that much trouble.

I totally agree but this doesn't seem possible for the cheaper devices since some of them don't support USB2GO. For example, a friend of mine has a rooted Galaxy Tab 3 and, while the firmware supports USB2GO, the hardware apparantly doesn't. It's absolutely the most secure but is it really feasible to ask people to either buy fairly more expensive tablets plus a Trezor just to store some Bitcoin? I suppose the answer to that depends on how many Bitcoin we're talking about, but it just seems like a bit much.

I'm developing some software around the ShapeShift.io service and would like to be able to programatically convert coins from one type to another. I don't see a way to get a deposit address from your API. Any chance of this being implemented?

How to import private key from Multibit to Electrum

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to import my Multibit private key into Electrum. I've gone through the process but am being told by Electrum that it is an invalid key. Is there a way (other than the recommended way) to import a key?

Re: Tool to brute-force offline armory password?
by
Cypherpunk38

As for how you validate it recreated the password - you use it. If it works, it did it right. If it does't, it didn't Wink How does the Armory client know you typed in the right password? Smiley

Right, but that's because Armory has a way to validate it: it can try to decrypt your wallet. Since you're not sending the Armory developers your wallet or your private key, they don't have the ability to test to see if this is the right password and this tool would likely never actually work since they would/could just send you the first password they came up with and if it works it works, if it doesn't it doesn't.  Their answer seem to indicate that, given a weak enough password and you remembering enough of it for them to work from, they can send you a password that has a very reasonable chance of working and they might (they haven't said this so I don't know) have the ability to know when the recreation process succeeded or failed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a dick here at all and I certainly understand how brute force works. But what bothers me most is that they can have some certainty that the generation process worked. Unless I am completely misunderstanding how things work (and I may be, so feel free to correct me if I am) they shouldn't be able to do that without testing the password against a private key (which they don't and should not have).

We have an in-house tool for that purpose (as long as you remember enough of your password that is). Create a ticket and ask for that, it will be escalated to the right person.

Umm..wait...what? How is this possible on a secure wallet? We definitely need more explanation as to how this works. If YOU GUYS can do it ANYBODY can do it if they figure out how. Can you explain HOW you can do this?
Did you read the details? You have to remember most of your password.

Ok, so it seems like the tool just brute forces the rest of the password from the point you remember on. So, how much of my password do I need to remember for this to work? And, if I remember a good portion of my password, then it's likely a password I've used before and, thus, I'd remember the rest of it probably. So let's say I have a 40 character password. How much of that do I need to remember for this to work?
It depends on the capacity of the computer you have (computing power) but majority of it.

OK, I understand what you're saying. But, here's another question: how, without the private key, do you validate that tool has recreated the correct password? Is this documented anywhere?

Re: Recreating a wallet using a mnemonic in different software?
by
Cypherpunk38
on 29/01/2015, 21:11:06 UTC
it is my understanding that Armory and Electrum use different mnemonics. so you can't create the same wallets with the same mnemonic

Thank you for the simple explanation. That is what I kind of suspected but I thought that there might be some kind of standard where the different mnemonics came out to the same thing. Glad I didn't try it! Thanks again.
