[2016-09-08] BitcoinTalk.org database is being sold on the DarkWeb !
by
DAOstock
on 08/09/2016, 16:11:00 UTC
The database of BitcoinTalk.org, a popular Bitcoin forum founded and moderated by the Reddit Bitcoin moderator Theymos, is being sold on the dark web.

In May 2015, BitcoinTalk announced that its server was compromised due to social engineering against ISP NFOrce, a type of confidence trick utilized to gather information, fraud, or a system breach. The database compromised from the 2015 security breach was stolen by the dark web vendor “DoubleFlag,” the same identity  initiating the sale of the recently compromised database of Dropbox.

Specifics of the stolen database

The BitcoinTalk.org database being sold on the dark web has 514,408 accounts, with the email address, gender, date of birth, website URL, location, password, personal text number, and username of each account. DoubleFlag shared part of the database to HackRead.com, which contained all of the personal and sensitive information above.

Although the majority of the passcodes have been encrypted with the SHA-256 algorithm and SMF password encryption, there are methods of decrypting the cryptographic hash function with password cracking technologies like brute-force strategy. The vendor stated that decrypting the passcodes in the BitcoinTalk.org database is fairly simple.

Criticisms from the Bitcoin community towards Theymos

Immediately after the sale of the BitcoinTalk.org database was initiated, users began to heavily criticize Theymos for the development of a multi-million dollar forum software which Theymos planned to launch.

The software is called Epochtalk, which, according to Theymos, is still being actively developed. It has a response and intuitive user interface with speed optimization through to the use of technologies, including AngularJS and PostgreSQL.

Users harshly criticized the fact that Theymos and the rest of the development team received around US$50,000 in donations and are still delaying the completion of the project, which began in 2014.

[2016-09-08] Everybody is excited about Altcoins, but nobody is using them!
by
DAOstock
on 08/09/2016, 15:08:00 UTC
The intention of this post is not to bash Altcoins. There are a lot of exciting projects out there, with vibrant communities, tirelessly working on advancing Blockchain projects and the fascinating world of cryptocurrencies. But let’s face the truth: Nobody is using Altcoins. And by Altcoins, we mean projects that use a tradeable token to incentivise the sturdiness and resilience of its blockchain – because without a token, a blockchain don’t make a whole lot of sense. So we’re talking about pretty much all projects that are listed on CoinCap.

You’re wondering how much turnover we had with Altcoins in the past two months? A little more than 3 Bitcoin in total. Roughly 2000 USD, if you generously round up. In the same time, we had a total turnover of approximately 2 million USD with Bitcoin. That’s 0.1 percent turnover in Altcoins. We charge a flat fee of 0.5% per transaction. Do the math. You’ll probably get the point.

[2016-09-08] Blockchain Technology to Help Fight Slavery in the Fishing Industry
by
DAOstock
on 08/09/2016, 13:48:39 UTC
A new digital technology has been trialled to track fish from trawler to the supermarket in a breakthrough that could help stop human rights abuses and illegal fishing.
Because human rights abuses and illegal fishing are so widespread in the fish industry, campaigners hope the technology, piloted by a U.K.-based blockchain company Provenance, will help manufacturers, retailers and restaurants track the origins of their fish.
At present the buying and selling of seafood is tracked by paper records and tags on the fish. The new blockchain approach sees local fishermen send SMS messages to register their catch on the blockchain. This identification is then transferred to a supplier along with the catch, with any subsequent move, for example processing or tinning, also recorded.

[2016-8-27] Can Bitmain’s new miner bring bitcoin mining back to homes?
by
DAOstock
on 27/08/2016, 00:11:25 UTC
One ambitious bitcoin company is seeking to make mining a hobbyist activity again.

China-based Bitmain let slip today it will soon release its latest bitcoin mining rig, the R4, which it believes will be powerful enough to "bring mining back home".

Representatives for Bitmain said that the R4 is "the second most powerful bitcoin miner in the world", and that it will seek to reach enthusiasts with its production.

By building the miner with 16nm chips, Bitmain said it is able to reduce the cost of electricity for the miner, a leading factor for profitability. According to the spec sheet, users can expect a hashrate of 8.6 TH/s with a power consumption and efficiency of 845W and nearly 0.1 J/GH, respectively.

[2016-08-26] Judge Grants Cryptsy Lawsuit Class Action Status
by
DAOstock
on 26/08/2016, 12:44:49 UTC
A Florida judge has certified a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of customers of the now-defunct digital currency exchange Cryptsy.

In an order issued yesterday, US District Judge Kenneth Marra approved a request by plaintiffs for class action certification, originally filed on 27th July.

According to the order, the certification covers all Cryptsy account holders as of 1st November, 2015. Specifically, it includes anyone "who held bitcoins, alternative cryptocurrencies or any other form of monies or currency" prior to that date on the exchange.

The lawsuit dates back to January, when after months of growing problems with withdrawals, Cryptsy abruptly closed amid claims it had suffered a debilitating hack a year and a half prior. At the time, the exchange said that it had millions in outstanding customer liabilities.

CEO Paul Vernon, one of the defendants named in the class action suit, said at the time that customers were misled about the health of the exchange in order to avoid a "panic".

In yesterday's court order, Marra further wrote:

"The Class claims are the conversion, negligence, unjust enrichment, specific performance, FDUPTA, fraudulent conveyance and civil conspiracy claims contained in counts I-V and VII – IX of the Amended Complaint."

The certification comes months after the court approved a receiver, handing over control of Crypty's assets in the process.

A recent report from receiver James Sallah alleged that Vernon had misappropriated millions of dollars in user funds, an allegation Vernon later denied in an email to CoinDesk.

Despite denying the claims, Vernon, who is believed to be residing somewhere in Asia, has yet to formally respond to the suit in court.

Re: [2016-08-25] Chronicled to build global registry for Internet of Things
by
DAOstock
on 25/08/2016, 15:54:19 UTC
In an effort to build a standard for the emerging Internet of Things (IoT), Chronicled is open sourcing a tool for registering connected devices on the ethereum blockchain.

Described as a "cross between Wikipedia and Carfax" for consumer goods, the platform will register the identities of near-field communication (NFC) and bluetooth low energy (BLE) chips, components of IoT that today allow smartphones to “talk” with other devices.

While the IoT has been hailed as an inevitability, technology experts ague that a fragmentation of standards have held back its adoption. Today, industry companies are each developing their own way for devices to communicate, but Chronicled's founders want to use the ethereum blockchain to make private IoT database registries interoperable.

[2016-08-25] tricky updated from DECENT before the start of ICO
by
DAOstock
on 25/08/2016, 09:34:22 UTC
Regarding many suggestions from the community and based on the total amount of DCT, we have decided to adjust token distribution and the token amount overall.
The DCT distribution and their final amount will be in following ratios:

DCT sold in the September Software sale will be 70% of the total DCT distributed. Part of this will be also pre-mine funds that will be distributed in following way:

10% for the DECENT Foundation and 2% for the Investment Fund
1,000,000 tokens for DECENT Bounty program
3,000,000 for Pre-software marketing.
The remaining 30% will be dedicated to mining rewards. This system will be based on disinflationary system and will be distributed over 20 years.

Another change is in DECENT Software Sale and its distribution:

50% bonus will be bound only to first 10,000,000 DCT. Afterwards only 10% bonus will be applicable for the whole 1st week of the Software Sale.

OKcoin get fined by The Higher People's Court of Heilongjiang Province, the judge is finished at July 14th,and put online at July 29th.This judge is beyond most people's awareness because the company and and other peer companies didn't want to spread the news until today(20160813) The Securities Times(in Chinese is 证券时报)criticized that blockchain trading should be subject to legal supervision by describing a recent case in a passage without naming the defendant is OKcoin.
As we all know,Chinese authority’s attitude towards bitcoin is restricting the use and prohibiting bitcoin links to the Substantial Economy.Since this judge is the first judge that the major Chinese bitcoin exchange is the defendent,we can get some real concerns of the athority by analyzing the judgments.

[2016-8-15] KRAKEN phishing warning
by
DAOstock
on 15/08/2016, 16:14:47 UTC
We have received many reports lately of clients falling victim to phishing sites appearing in the ads, above the organic search results, of all of the major search engines.
Unfortunately, it seems to be easier to get an ad up than it is to have one taken down.  Our efforts at reporting the malignant ads have, so far, only resulted in temporary removal.  The matter is now in the hands of our legal team, who are seeking a more permanent cure..
