Got on e through earlier this week that had taken about six weeks.

Been waiting for dip since wednesday... Now when it came was too drunk to react. Even saw it happening on Moody's but somehow couldn't bring myself to place order in time, goxxx lagged out and we're bouncing back up. Aw what the heck, it's just money anyway. Cheers!

Created my account yesterday to try out the site. Took some time getting used to the client, and the overall user experience is not the best, but still a cool thing to be able to play for BTC! New account good streak rig didn't hurt either..!  Cool Let's get the traffic up and some more tourneys on Euro prime time and we're good!

But the _real_ unpractical bit is that you need a Bitcoin client connected to the network to spend Bitcoins. Cell phones don't have the bandwidth to be constantly downloading everybody's blocks.

How much data are we talking about here? You "only" need to sync whatever's been added since the last time you used the client right?

Will there be a way to speed transactions confirmations up? Will Bitcoins ever be practical for use in stores, markets or private quick transactions IRL via say your cellphone?

Bitcoin will never be practical for use IRL.

At least not until they come up with some real simple and smart mobile apps I guess.

0/conf will work for retail transactions.  I bet the rate of people using a double-spend technique to screw people out of money would be roughly equivalent to the rate of people using counterfeit bills for a cash transaction.  And whoever the retailer is can use security cameras or other techniques to track the perp down and prosecute them.
Ok so maybe not a big problem then after all. Thanks for thr quick answer.

Re: Why does wallet.dat change?

I think it would be much more user-friendly to actually CREATE, NAME and SAVE your
own wallets (prompt the first time you open the client). Imagine a family sharing the same computer and having to copy/move around a bunch of files all named wallet.dat. Unnecessarily tricky! I'm sure there are lots of plans on incoporating better wallet handling in future versions.

Re: POLL: What name would you give to the smallest unit of bitcoin (0.00000001)?
by

Microcent.
1 BTC = Bitcoin, commonly called "Big bit"
0.01 BTC = Bitcent (practical today)
0.001 BTC = Millibit (future de facto unit)
0.000001 BTC = Microbit (more futuristic)
0.00000001 BTC = Microcent

Still below average, discovered Bitcoin when it was around 10$. It's almost embarrasing how cheap you could buy those 100 BTC just a couple of months ago. Should've would've could've...

Re: Can bitcoins be lost?
by

on 24/06/2011, 23:04:50 UTC
Yup, they're simply lost forever. Can't really see how you could ever determine which coins are lost and which ones are stored in a "treasure chest wallet", even after years and years of noone touching them. So the maximum 21 million number is really theoretical and the number of Bitcoins in actual use will start declining eventually I guess.

Re: Does anyone know of a way to convert PayPal USD to BTC?
by
DDreez
on 12/06/2011, 20:06:09 UTC
BitMarket.eu has PayPal as a payment option. This site escrows the BTCs and the users transfer the funds via bank transfer (mainly EU residents) or PayPal (worldwide). It's peer to peer so you buy directly from approved users, not from the site itself. I myself have been buying there both with bank transfer and PayPal without problems. However they had a _lot_ of people sign up last week so they actually disabled new signups temporarily for technical purposes. Don't know if it's opened up again now or not. GL

Re: What is your current BTC situation?
by

Got into Bitcoin a couple of weeks ago and out of curiosity bought in for a few hundred $. That was about when the price was passing 10 $ on the way up. First it just kept going up and up, but this weekends' drop back down to 10-15 was a bit of a reality check. I still think Bitcoin is a cool idea, and it should probably stabilize in the future (hopefully not too low :-). Swings this huge have to work against all attempts of running a controlled business in BTC.
