A couple pages back, some users expressed their interest in some stats. Allow me to quote myself from LoyceV's data on the Wall Observer thread || moon, hodl , fuck, weeee in Meta:

I wasn't sure where to post this, It's obvious the Wall Observer thread has earned it's place on the forum, and for that reason I picked Meta. I don't want it to be burried under dozens of pages of new posts in no time.

Prologue
I've always been reluctant to scrape the massive Wall Observer thread. This changed when Maggiordome notified me about fillippone's post in Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion.

I've scraped the thread up to page 24395. My scraper downloaded 487799 out of 487900 posts. I don't know what happened to the remaining 101 posts.

The most frequent posters
I asked if anyone is interested in a list of users who posted there: 5771 users have posted in the Wall Observer thread, with just over 84 posts on average.

The following users have posted x times in Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion
Merit is based on last Friday's data dump. I only show Merit if there has been at least 1 transaction. If it shows 0 Merit, that means the user has sent Merit, but didn't receive anything. Trust is not shown on the Speculation-board.

Keywords
It turns out the regulars in the Wall Observer thread have more wishes:
-how many lines of text JJG has posted
-which word has been posted the most : moon, hodl , fuck, weeee... ?
-who has posted the most haikus
I haven't counted JJG's lines, and I wouldn't know how to count haikus.
But I did count the number of posts that contain the requested keywords (case insensitive, the text may be part of a longer phrase, including quotes and in some cases the username or personal text). Click the link to see the full list of who posted what when:
moon: 11623 posts
hodl: 20379 posts
fuck: 27580 posts
weeee: 1328 posts

Keyword frequency graphs
Much more interesting than the total, is seeing the frequency of each keyword:

If you want my opinion, to me there's no doubt that for anyone who doesn't use margin or stop loss orders on Bitfinex, he will be fine and won't suffer from any possible inside trading because Bitfinex doesn't exist in a vacuum and follows other exchanges.

I don't want any witch hunts and I will delete any sensitive info should anyone dox him. I've no interest in making it about one person, rather I wish to make it about the whole Bitcoin exchange "industry".

Sounds 100% necessary for healthy growth.

are you going to really, discriminate the difference between actively trading on a daily basis, vs adjusting his position as the fucking asset tanks? man you're showing your inner lambchop today.
Not my problem you don't know what trading is: I'm not the one discriminating between timeframes.

BTW, as I understand it, the context of this audio recording is that he slipped up before that on some Teamspeak channel, and the shitstorm came over him via a couple Reddit threads. So, lots of backpedaling is to be expected.

Are you telling me that such things should not be investigated, and that exchanges shouldn't publish a ruleset how they deal with such conflicts of interest? Hell, even the Micky Mouse Magic the Gathering exchange always claimed that they forbid their employees from trading there.

I am about not trying to incite witch hunts on small bits of info in an informal teamspeak chat, but I don't doubt we need more oversight into these situations.

Hey Guys,

This is Josh Rossi, VP of Business Development at Bitfinex, some of my initial comments were referenced below. The word "trade" has multiple meanings, and is thrown around a lot, and I just want to clarify a few points that have come up.

The bio information that was linked to is based on an old bio that was incorrectly written on the tether.to beta site. Phil was managing a fund that was invested in cryptocurrencies, but ceased day to day trading activities upon starting his role at Bitfinex, which roughly coincided with the fall of Mt Gox.

The entire management team monitors our personal accounts, in order to prevent abuse, and we all act as checks and balances on each other. The idea that someone who works in Bitcoin shouldn't be able to own or adjust his position in bitcoin is silly. Bitcoin is not a publicly traded company, it is an asset. Any orders Phil may have placed would have been limit orders, and subject to the rest of the management teams monitoring. To be very clear, Phil has not been actively trading since joining the team at Bitfinex. That being said, and given the volatility of bitcoin, it is necessary to adjust one's exposure. We spend a lot of time trying to build the best exchange, and we definitely do hold and are bullish on bitcoin. There is a difference between a "trade" in the sense of being a day trader or actively trading positions, and executing a limit order, which is basically a passive buy or a sell of the asset in question.

We have become the number one USD exchange, specifically, because we have made it our top priority to provide a fair and even playing field. We engage with our clients and the community and try to be as transparent as possible. We hold ourselves, and each other to the highest ethical standards.

Basically, we are very excited about the future of cryptocurrencies, and are honored that we can be a part of the core infrastructure. We are in it for the long haul, Bitfinex has been around for quite a while. We have consistently proven that we will not sell out our future for a quick buck now.

If enough people share your displeasure they best change their policy, otherwise as always in the bitcoin world user beware.

For all those doubting how amateurish and criminal our exchanges are, tune in yourself: http://vocaroo.com/i/s1JIOjeIjWbN

A professional criminal would never slip up, and an honest amateur would not do this. But when you combine both, you get the clusterfuck we have.

so despite him saying he doesn't actively trade it, you wanna start a witch hunt. I am sorry its not cool for him to divest or manage his wealth to an extent.
He contradicts himself by backpedaling later. He trades.

As someone else on Reddit sums it up:

Quote
"IM NOT TRADING. WELL, IVE BEEN A TRADER MY WHOLE LIFE AND I BUY WHEN IT GOES DOWN AND SELL WHEN IT GOES UP BUT YEAH IM NOT ACTIVELY TRADING, THAT WOULD BE INAPPROPRIATE."

are you going to really, discriminate the difference between actively trading on a daily basis, vs adjusting his position as the fucking asset tanks? man you're showing your inner lambchop today.

A decent attack would've just stated they shouldn't allow employees to trade @ bitfinex, and that they should manage or trade their bitcoin holdings at a different exchange. Instead we incite witch hunts.

Chose pre-goxin mentalities, gox sure did slap bitcoin into a realization that we need better checks in place for our exchanges. Or you could just keep your private keys in your own control.

So... do we have better exchanges? Probably. Good enough on average? Probably not.

Thing is: money will move from people with lax key security to people with better key security. So over time bitcoins are being stored more and more safely.

its a worthy debate, I am not sure how much multi sig is implemented, but we're moving in the right direction. eventually I would hope people became tech savvy enough that mycelium p2p trading would be possible.

Price has flatlined since the Coinbase announcement pop.

Well at least it has not tanked like the dozens of other times acceptance /good news hit.

My prediction:  Whale traders have known about the Coinbase deal for the last week, perhaps longer, and have been propping up the price in hopes of new buyers rushing in.  If they don't get the expected rise they want/need (+20%), they will dump again soon.  They're gonna dump either way.

speculators going to speculate.. most of these movements have almost nothing to do with the news. More of the fact that real whales don't even play on exchanges, but they do make splashes from time to time. Either way .. the trend will break when it breaks, similarly to the bull top, the spring was a double down on paradigm shift which can still play out in the coming years with proper infrastructure investment.

swiss central bank depegs the franc from the euro ..
the Dow Jones sinks over 2%, while silver went up 7% and gold went up 4.5%:"
bitcoin being in it's own world is.....down.
it seem like something wrong in bitcoin world .

remember, even if currently about 800k $ get invested into Bitcoin, it will only cover the inflation. You have to add every merchant instantly selling + regular sellers.

That's a hell of selling pressure every day. That's the main reason we will most likely stay in this bear market until something drastic happens. Like a Fiat Currency Crashing  (€, $ or  ¥).
If nothing magical happens, the next halving of the mining reward would at least take out some pressure so the currency could grow in value.

yup i do remember the inflation of 3600 bitcoins everyday. i agree with your assessment. i think the swiss didn't unpeg from euro and hurt their own economy just for the heck of it. somethings going on.

There was an influx of money into their country ..its pretty much made them de-peg. I'm basing this off one article I read though

There are bulltards who bought 100(or more) btc at $10(or less) (invested $1,000) and sold 2 btc at $1,000 ($1,000 profit). Keep posting memes. (98 btc left) and we are buying more.

The difference is:
In the past you could accumulate with 10k $ a lot off a limited supply (bitcoin) -> wait for the pump and dump!
Today this is not possible, because you need a shitload off bagholders to push the price to the moon.

But yeah, some early adopters still try to push the price, because some were to stupid to ever lockin some profits and get out partially.

In the past bitcoin was worth nothing $0.001, $0.01, $0,1 ... $1 ... and so on. I have first bought at $12.5 b/c I believe bitcoin will be worth $50k( and more).

I'd say infinite.

I wonder what it would be @ when 0.5% of internet users want a coin but can only get 0.14357750366891372239957301007592 if they all got a piece of one

total btc supply / (2014 internet users * 0.05)
21000000 / 146 262 467.75 = 0.14357750366891372239957301007592

this number cant be right

/edit its 1.4 btc :9

2,925,249,355 x 0.05 = 146,262,467.75

21,000,000 btc / 146,262,467.75 people = 0.143578

thats 5% Smiley

thank you for finding my failure to do basic math lol
