Regarding the LEDs on USB erupters. Yeah, that's the main reason I keep using them Cheesy

@emisi: Is the fan pointing at the bitfury blades really only cooling method? I mean, there are no passive heat-sinks on the back or anything like that?

Re: [ESHOP launched] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet

What is the guarantee that myTREZOR.com will always be around for me to be abel to spend/receive bitcoins using the Trezor?

In 30 years, will that website still be around?

Trezor support for electrum is already present (it's just not stable yet). You can already try it

I would like to return my trezor and get a refund of my 3 BTCs how can I do this? Obviously they aren't going to fix the mytrezor web wallet and I want my money back.

Edit: Talked to my lawyer about this, and he said there should be no reason that a refund should be an issue. I would also like to use escrow to make sure they don't stiff me.

What problems do you have on your mind? I'm only aware of small inconveniences. Nothing that would prevent me from using it.
If you have the metallic one, I bet many people would be glad to buy it from you. Obviously not for 3 BTC though.

Looks good. As long as the postage to Slovakia do not exceed like $18, I might take it. Is it realistic?

Re: Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet

so i have a few questions / concerns. I love the product and the signing transactions without a hot wallet loading a key, but I want to be sure its a good method for cold storage security.

1) if the trezor breaks or is stolen it can be recovered by a 12word seed. How can i secure this code so that it cannot be stolen and used to take access from a different trezor?
2) what measures are in place to detect / prevent lo-jacked trezors or malicious code/components?
3) does the trezor retain access to all its addresses and change addresses? Can I constantly reload it to the same address without compromising the coins?
4) how does the trezor generate an address - could it be replicated based on the physical design?
5) can the trezor wallet be accessed using the seed but not another trezor? What if trezor goes out of business and you cannot buy a new trezor to load with the seed?
6) I heard a single trezor can hold multiple distinct wallets under the same seed but different passwords. How could I set that up to store spending quantities seperately (and secretly) from my long-term storage address?

I want to use this as a fuctional backup for the majority of my bitcoin funds, with the seed safely stored in a few offsite files/safes and some safeguards (password?) on those. I want it to act as the payment address for my mining and not worry that it may not be accessible if something happens to the trezor or trezor support.

1) It's up to you to properly secure the paper backup. You can also memorize the seed if you have good memory but it's 24 words now by default Smiley If you choose to use the pass-phrase, the 24 words alone cannot be used to access you coins.
2) The official firmware release is signed by the developers. If someone try to put the custom firmware on your Trezor you will see the warning on the screen.
3) Addresses are generated deterministically. While using the same seed & passphrese your Trezor will always have access to the same keys. Regarding the address re-using, standard recommendations applies. It's possible, but not recommended. You will not loose your bitcoins but you may loose some privacy.
4) Way that Trezor generate the keys from master private key is described by BIP-0032. The master private key itself is generated using entropy that device can provide itself with entropy provided by your PC. The master key is then represented by the 24 words from dictionary defined in BIP-0039
5) You can use any compatible software wallet. All you need to do is enter your seed and pass-phrase. Currently there is only Wallet32 for android, but support for Electrum, Multibit and Armory is coming.
6) If you already initialized your Trezor with a passphrase, just enter a different one in the "log-in" process. Depending on what pass-phrase you enter, you will get access to different wallets. But you can also have multiple accounts under one passphrase (although all of the accounts corresponding to specific pass-phrase are visible so it's only good for separating the funds instead of hiding them)

Re: Potential attack by solo mining a long chain?
by

on 13/03/2014, 14:35:31 UTC
No, because blockchain length is not the only important factor. Chain with higher difficulty will win.
And there are also hardcoded checkpoints in every bitcoin client release.

Companies like BFL and CoinTerra are designing the chips to calculate hashes efficiently. Other companies like Global Foundries and TSMC are physically making those chips, based on design from them.

Such thing cannot happen. Difficulty depend on hash power. If hash power decrease, difficulty will decrease as well.

Re: Can anyone move my BTC using an old backup and old password of a wallet?
by
Deafboy
on 18/12/2013, 14:59:10 UTC
It's possible. If there are some unspent outputs on old keys included n that backup.
To be 100% sure the old backup cannot be used to steal some (or all) of your money, just create the new one and send all the coins to it. But keep the old one in case someone send you bitcoins to one of the old addresses.

I was absolutely shocked after I discovered that some well educated people working in IT thought bitcoin isn't devisible. I wasn't taking this psychological "coin" aspect seriously in the past, but now I am pissed every time I see the animated spinning coin on the TV screen.

Re: Defending against Selfish pools with BFGMiner and GBT
by

I don't own any blades or KNC, but with BFL and few USB erupters it's working pretty fine.
And I'm running it on an old laptop. Uptime of the machine is 88 days now, bfgminer 39 days.

Setting up the p2pool itself was easy, most complicated part for me was the automation (like auto-restart of all mining related processes), and if anything happens (long term power outage for example), all I need to do is push the button and everything will start itself in the right order.
The only drawback is my crappy and unstable DSL connection. As soon as enough peers connect to me, it crash and come up with new IP address.

To get back on topic, I wasn't aware of this feature of GBT protocol in combination with solo fallback. It's brilliant .
Disadvantage of GBT is higher load on both sides (pool and miner), so I'm not sure that pools will support it if significant part of the miners switch to it.

Well, if "selfish" mining strategy is more profitable then the "honest", everybody will (in theory) switch to it so they can compete with each other. However, this technique hugely depends on luck while trying to propagate competing block through the network which will not always be successful.
