Is that wall actually being eaten, or did he pull 1k of it?
He's pulling, very frequently. It looks scripted, everytime the buy orders get close is when it just disappears for a second. It reappears when the bids get sold into and the action is lower.
It's probably bitstamp's automatic ordering system. Instead of market order or putting a price, "simple" ordering puts and moves the wall for you to the closest price in the opposite side every few minutes.

although I still can't see why anyone would even consider wiring fiat to Gox right now
I did a SEPA wire recently because I was verified and I wasn't on Bitstamp. Now that I'm verified in BS too, I don't need Gox for anything.

While it's pleasing to see bitcoins return to a more sensible valulation, the rapid pace of swings is most concerning for those who want to use bitcoins for serious purposes. It's down almost 50% in a week. What kind of business can tolerate their currency swinging wildly like that when ordering stock and setting prices weeks or months in advance?
Any business that sets prices in fiat. This way the volatility problem is transferred to the consumer. Yesterday I bought something with bitcoins one minute after buying those bitcoins.
I been running my bot for about 9 Months and I been up about 1000%, I guess you would be wrong...
Just a single bitcoin investiment from 9 months ago yields the same profit...

Users can see what the actual exchange will be applied and choose to wait if diverted too much from the average.

Again, you are missing my point. Because this fluctuates so wildly, anyone who wants to use Bitcoin IS an investor.
Lower fees....debatable. We just moved from from $166+ to $157 in no time. That transaction just became 5%+ more expensive if I purchased @ $166, not including spread and BitPay transaction fees. Actually, while I'm writing this we are now at $153.....so much more expensive than any CC fee. This is the foreign exchange risk I'm talking about. $166 - $153 is almost 8% in a matter of minutes.....plus 1% for BitPay and 1% for the spread (now at 1.5% due to volatility).
Take the 24-hour weighted average. Or 3-day weighted average. Is what regular people should use. Also, this volatility won't remain forever. Merchants don't like volatility, even when converting to USD, so at least they believe it's temporal.
More potential clients.....are you finding people that only use Bitcoin and not fiat???

I do use fiat, but as I said earlier, there were several potential purchases that I didn't do at all because of lack of merchant support. Having a bitcoin option makes me more prone to spend money.
This is the chicken and egg problem. Your statements are like critizing creating e-commerce 10-15 years ago: the public was too small, but we needed those early merchants to keep the ball rolling, get more people used to do online transactions, hence geting more merchants doing e-commerce... etc.

If the price weren't fluctuating at all, I would have all of my money as possible in bitcoins. In fact I tried during the long 5$ period last year. I don't use myself as an "investor", but as an user that has its own bank. There were several potential purchases last year that I didn't make because I had to go to the bank, do transfers, etc.
Potential clients includes investors, but also users that just want to save in bitcoins. It doesn't matter that merchants convert the money into USD, the other advantages still applies.
Also, PayPal is very expensive for very small purchases.

I guess you mean "it's down". Still 250 BTC strong. Whoever put it made a large buy with no slippage thanks to the predictable force downwards after the rally. Quite smart person.
I doubt it. I guess that person put an "instant" order, which is not the same as mtgox's market order: it puts the order at market price and then moves it every 10 minutes. I guess it's the same person who is selling now. If you want cheap coins, sell all now and put an order where that wall will end.

I've noticed the bid is sometimes higher than the ask. What is with that?
It's supposed to update in real time (without having to refresh), but it seems bids and asks are switched. I noticed this bug just when the price collapsed the 10th and it was very confusing.
