Re: What should I do with my miner?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I might keep the case around just as a display thing. I couldn't sell it on eBay, because while I might get lucky, chances are it would sell for less than what a WR-703N sells for. If that's the case, I'd rather do something with the router (like make a PirateBox) and then repurpose the power supply and fans. If someone could figure out how to effectively repurpose these ASICs, they could make a lot of money and get a lot of hardware dirt cheap. I would like to see someone go into collecting miners, either as an individual or something like an exhibit at a museum. I think I'd donate it to that.

What should I do with my miner?
by
Distribution
on 19/09/2014, 14:42:27 UTC
Almost a year ago, I bought an Avalon 60gh/s miner. It's a batch 2 I believe. I had a problem with it at one point which permanently reduced it's hashing power to about 50 gh/s. It still mines, but I'm moving and it's no longer going to be profitable for me to run it. What should I do with it? The obvious answer is to sell it. A guy who lives in school housing wanted to buy it, but we couldn't get it to work on the locked down network. Plus, at this point, I might be better off selling the power supply and router separately. Is there something better I could do with it? Donate it to a museum? Send it to Dominica? Gut it, turn the router into a piratebox and store change in the case? Suggestions?

I can't believe I'm just learning about taking bitcoins to space. I'm an aerospace engineering student and will definitely be following this. Is the best place to learn how I can contribute here and the Google group? It's precisely this kind of thing that I want to do as an engineer.

What's a rem 700 338lm with nightforce optics worth?

NightForce optics is pretty broad, do you know which scope is on it?

AR-15 parts | Uppers | Lowers | Rifle Kits | 80% lowers | and various other items with more to come.  NOW TAKING BITCOIN!!!!!!

This has been a long time coming so take a moment to check out the site and take a read.  I have been around BTC for a while and have worked on various projects.  A while back I connected with this small business that provides unique parts for various kinds of rifles.  The owner and I got to talking and he wanted a website and I said that if you took BTC too that would make a great online offering for what they sell.  As I worked with him on building his online solution I was supersized with all the issues we faced in setting up this type of site.  It has been one long learning experience that really I just did not expect.

So about the site, please keep in mind that this site is not sexy, cool, slick or really in no way advanced in what it does technically other than offer products.  Being that the company is small and focused on their core business we wanted to use solid and commonly found solutions for the website operation. With any small business expect the same growing pains a customer would or could expect but I will say his prices are great, his offerings are unique and cool so overtime we hope the site will continue to grow in its offerings and operation.

What we did focus on is how the site would work and how BTC would be handled.  The site is powered by 3D cart technology providing an established and stable shopping cart solution for maintaining the core function of the site.  For processing Bitcoins that became a challenge but by using Coinbase we were able to provide a solid third party solution to process and manage BTC purchases mainly for everyone piece of mind.  The last thing anyone wants is another MtGox issue!

So I am spreading the word about this site, offerings and that it now takes bitcoin.  I am not part of the company but just a subcontractor helping to offer these services to the BTC community.

BY THE WAY, the owner does not think he will get much traffic from offering BTC so let’s prove him WRONG!  Hell check out the site and send him questions or worst case buy something, ha.

Good job. People ask me a lot where they can buy gun stuff for bitcoins, and I never really have an answer for them. Unless they need cases of gun cleaning stuff.

Do you guys mine PPcoin as well with your Avalons?

I gave it a go, but long block times + 120 confirms means it's about 3 days before you actually get your hands on the coins. At the moment 3 days is an eternity Smiley

Have you looked the exchange like btc-e to see if on converting them to BTC that you'd get double the bitcoins compared to just mining bitcoins only?

Sorry, I still don't fully understand how to use the exchanges, I am not a stock type/exchange type of guy. LOL

I mine NMC, but the exchange rate is so small, it's almost enough to cover pool fees.

Thanks. That's what I figured. I looked at the modules to see if I could see a failed capacitor, but I was unable to find any noticeable signs of failure.

I assume that the numbers on the top correspond with the numbers of modules. So I figured the problem was at P14. I don't know how accurate that is. If that is the case, here's an album of that section. Maybe someone else can pick out an anomaly. I also took off that metal plate and looked to see if I could spot a burnt up ASIC chip.

EDIT: Also, sometimes [match_work_count14] => 0 will not be zero, implying that maybe it works sometimes. But the number is always magnitudes lower than the others.

Finally, it's been running for a couple days now on --avalon-auto without problem. So I haven't seen the red LED or any shutdowns.

I didn't notice any burnt caps in your photos either. It must be some other component with an intermittent problem.
I wouldn't worry about it for now as long as it keeps running. It wouldn't be worth the down-time to find the problem at this point in time.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know what's going on. Now one of the other modules (#8) is showing that it's doing about half the work as the others. My fear is that it's too hot. But thanks for looking.

I woke up this morning to find my miner doing nothing , and showing a red LED. I restarted and it mines , but it's getting fewer Gh. I looked at the cgminer config page and it looks like one of the units is out (match_work_count14 ). What could cause the red light and sudden stopping of one of the units?

The red led indicates a power supply problem.
I would guess the most likely problem to be a capacitor failed on the one miner section and shutdown the psu.
There's several pictures and reports of cap failures throughout the thread.

Hard to predict if it will shutdown the psu again or not but if it did I would consider removing the power connections on the bad miner section.

I wouldn't get too concerned about occasional high numbers,  I have also observed intermittent spikes in DH% even on earlier versions.

I think it's best to leave it set on --avalon-auto and let cgminer do it's thing, after all the programmers have put an immense amount of work into this and I'm pretty sure they know what works best.

@ckolivas, are communication errors used in the DH% calc? Considering the issues with the avalon controller this would explain the intermittent peaks.

I have also noticed that it takes a fairly long time for the DH% to return to it's previous average, would it be possible to reset it quicker?

That would make sense.  I had just changes my firewall settings, and I don't think it was communicating.

I've started using --avalon-auto, but lately it's been giving me some pretty big DH% numbers. Earlier, I was over 7%, so I just set the frequency to 375 and turned auto off.At what DH% should I really be worried? My problem is that I live in Florida, and while it's been reasonably cool at night to open the window, I shut the windows when I sleep or am not at the house. Then the room starts heating up. I assumed auto would lower the frequency when it starts seeing large DH% numbers or when the temperatures hit 50, but it just seems to go from 405 to 404.

I think i have identical problem... Just today I noticed that my hash rate is 0 for last few days... I can connect to avalon, but remote I cannot fix it.. (i did numerous restarts, changed configs etc).. nothing...
Will go inspect the unit tomorrow in person (might be that some chips died again, so i'll take unit apart and see...)
Weird thing is that the fans seem to be completely off as well.. here is log. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what the problem is, but I was going to say if you have an Android phone, there's an app that will send you a notification if your miner goes down. That way you can get on the case as soon as possible. It's called bitcoinium.

Also, how do you connect remotely? VNC?

You could post on bitcoin-otc. It's a little bit of a process to get started, but worth it, especially if you do a lot of trades and build up your OTC trust.

Are you new to mining and Avalons? It kind of sounds like you are.

You should connect to your Avalon's and assign a static IP within your own network and make sure you assign the correct Gateway IP and DNS (usually it's 8.8.8.Cool otherwise they won't hash.

As soon as you log into your Avalon go to the CGminer Status link and you'll see the Firmware revision number.

A good firmware to get is from CK it ends in 0821

Yes, I am new to mining with Avalons. I did connect to the avalon and assign it a static IP and it did work for about 20 minutes. I unplugged it an literally moved it 2 feet and plugged it back in (same network cable and power cord) and it wouldn't reconnect and mine. I could still however get to its web based browser from another computer in the building so I know its connected to the internet.

Thanks for the info about the firmware, I still dont get WHICH file I'm supposed to download to update it. Its currently running 20130723.

To solve my networking problem, I used DHCP at the advice of an other forum member. Go to Network>Interfaces Where it says LAN, click edit. Under protocol change static IP to DHCP client. It will assign an IP address to the miner, you'll just have to discover what that is. For my wireless network, I was able to look at connected devices under my router's management page. I'm not sure how you'd find yours. But this worked like a charm for me. This new IP is what you'll use to connect to the configuration page for your miner.

EDIT: To flash firmware, download the firmware (for example, this is Avalon's most recent), then in your miner's management page go to system>backup/flash firmware. Then browse for it and flash the image.

Now that I got my Avalon mini up and running, I think I found another use. You could strap a couple of these on an airplane and take off. They really throw out some air. In addition, while the chips are probably no good, there are a few things salvageable on it, like the PSU. I'm sure the aluminum case could be repurposed somehow. And the WR703N could be turned into a PirateBox. Worst comes to worst, they will be worth significantly less, but not absolutely worthless.

Avalon ASIC mini - Bad Gateway error when restarting cgminer
by
Distribution
on 04/11/2013, 13:56:33 UTC
I've had a little trouble getting my Avalon mini to mine. I'm at a point where when I configure cgminer and then go to restart it, it waits for a while and then says "Bad Gateway, Process did not produce any response." It says that it's connected to the wifi, but I'm unable to ping any address. I've also updated to the latest firmware. Any ideas?

EDIT: I've posted about this in the Avalon user thread, the Avalon support thread, Avalon IRC channel (nothing going on there), and the Bitcoin IRC, but it tends to get lost between other conversations. So if you've seen this from me multiple times, I apologize. But any help is certainly appreciated.
