The website got 500+ new visitors this week after Tech Crunch mentioned an article that talked about Ethstick (sadly the publicity was bad as the author misinterpreted the code, but it's some crazy exposure anyway). He updated his post with my reply to his concerns on Reddit after I contacted him.

For those curious:

Clarification:

Have a good day everyone, and feel free to chase some more carrots!

Hah, that's funny they used your well written contract as their example, when in fact they simply failed to understand the code.  There are plenty of excellent examples out there of Ethereum contracts with fatal flaws that would make good write-ups, but EthStick doesn't belong on that list. Smiley

Re: [ETH] >1000ETH jackpot!! New DAPP - "Governmental" Government simulation
by
DustBluster
on 16/05/2016, 20:01:52 UTC
It looks like Governmental is stuck, at least temporarily.  The last successful player is due the jackpot of 1,098.6932 ETH (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).  Etherscan.io reveals multiple attempts to pay them out, however all transactions since that player have failed.  Shocked

When I try to send a transaction with a large gas limit, I get the message "Exceeds block gas limit".  As I understand it the block gas limit is a hard cap on how much gas can be spent on a single transaction and any transaction requiring more will always fail.  The block gas limit changes over time, so it may be possible some day to execute another transaction on Governmental, but not until that limit increases substantially enough.

Re: Play RPS with [ETH] - Uncheatable with crypted Hands !!

Another nice DApp with some good looking code and a useful and clean web interface.  Well done!  Cheesy

The encrypted hand approach you've used is an elegant solution to submitting and later revealing secret information.

The only security risk that stands out is that when the website encrypts a hand it sends the plaintext password to a Node.js server for encrypting.  The Node.js server is presumably under the game authors control, so in theory they could see a player's password and determine what hand was played before choosing what hand to play against it.  The page includes instructions for technically savvy users to encrypt the hand themselves.  I'm not assuming the author has any malicious intent, just identifying that trust is required when using the website to encrypt a hand.

Personally, 0.5 ETH is too much for me for a game of luck.  I'll wager bigger on games of skill and bluffing, but only take very small risks when the outcome is based on luck.  At 0.1 ETH I might play a little.

Good work Smiley

Regarding the gas problem some people have when they strat a new round, I have noticed that the latest version of mist (0.72) seems to calculate the cost correctly and works everytime, at least for me.

Dustbluster are your using the last one ?

That makes sense. Good to know  Cheesy

I haven't updated to the latest release yet because I saw reports that it sometimes hangs due to it's new event log getting overwhelmed by activity on The DAO.  I expect there'll be a patch for that soon and I'll update then.

I noticed that Mist (Ethereum Wallet) doesn't always calculate the gas requirement correctly when starting a new round (Etherscan shows the failed transaction and no ETH gets lost).  Getting it to work requires increasing the gas limit when sending the transaction.  I increase it by a LOT to be sure it goes through and because the excess will get returned anyway.

I'm "ShinySquirrels".  It looks like out of 10 plays I'm down by about 0.2 ETH.  I'll keep playing, the break-even point is pretty fair, and it's fun Smiley

I wouldn't assume it's anywhere near over.  People are learning about Ethereum every day and discovering for the first time what we've been exploring for a while now.  Several exchanges have recently enabled ETH trading and The DAO should be getting the attention of curious outsiders.  You have to be a little patient to receive a 120% ROI without any effort.  There are a lot of people yet to even discover this, give it time  Wink

Happy DAO Day!

In honor of "The DAO" token sale going live and the value of ETH on the rise, Shiny Squirrels is offering a limited time +15% bonus multiplier and a temporary increase in the maximum deposit from 5 ETH to 7 ETH.

This opportunity will not last long. The contract will be around forever, but the extra bonuses are fleeting.

Re: [ETH] Game Directory - central contract for Ethereum game listings
by
DustBluster
on 26/04/2016, 10:59:08 UTC
Why would the owner of this contract get 50% of deposits?Huh

This is clearly scandalous and that's why this thing doesn't make any sense.

Create the same contract with no fees to the owner, and reward just all the previous participants, that's all.

The owner doesn't deserve anything here, this is just in contradiction with this principle ! Huh

This is an experiment and you are free to participate in it or not.

This is not a zero-sum game, it is first-and-foremost a registry of advertisements for money-making games.  Use of this contract should not be expected to make a direct profit for most participants.  50% of the low cost of entry is shared with the other participants as a friendly bonus and small extra incentive to join.

If you would prefer to write some original software to your own specification, thoroughly test it, get it verified everywhere, create an original web interface for it, and then give that away for free then that's entirely your choice and I fully support your efforts and wish you luck.

If, however, you'd prefer to save yourself a lot of hours and effort to advertise your money-making games, I invite you to take advantage of this contract.

The choice is yours.  Have a wonderful day.

Re: [ETH] Game Directory - central contract for Ethereum game listings

Isn't State of Dapps doing that?

"State of the Dapps" is providing a centralized curated directory of DApps.  They are an excellent service.  However, while their subject mater is Ethereum, the service itself is a centralized website and not a decentralized Ethereum contract.

This Game Directory is in fact itself a DApp.  The service being provided is similar but not identical to "State of the DApps".  The Game Directory is targeting a specific niche within the Ethereum community and it is using a decentralized Ethereum contract to do so - no dependence on a central service provider necessary.

The HTML page that provides a window into the contract is not necessary, the contract is accessible without it and anyone could copy the HTML or build an alternative interface should the "official" website not prove adequate.

And, in the spirit of Ethereum pyramid games, the contract redistributes the low cost of each new entry with all its members.  The low cost also serves to inhibit spam.

An Ethereum Registry of Ethereum Games!

  • New users can find Ethereum games to try out, long into the future.
  • Game owners can register their games to make it easier for others to discover.
  • Get paid a portion of the registration cost of EVERYONE who registers after you.

To register you must use an Ethereum client such as the MIST Ethereum Wallet.  Select the function "Add Game" and enter your game's address and details.  The cost to register is 500 Finney (0.5 ETH), which you submit along with the details as part of the "Add Game" function call.  The registration cost is shared with those who have registered before you and entitles you to a share of all future registrations.

Re: [ETH] Shiny SQUIRRELS - ETH Multiplier with Rolling Payouts and Fun Bonuses

I've updated the original post with a direct link to the Etherscan.io page and with the ABI code used for accessing the contract from Ethereum Wallet.

How do the bonuses work. Im having a hard time understanding what is going on.

How much you deposit and which pathway you go down affects which bonuses you'll receive.

On http://shinysquirrels.co/ you can see the "Next Path" will be between 1/5 and 5/5.  That refers to which of the 5 bonus pathways you'll go down when you make a deposit (assuming someone else doesn't make a deposit faster than you, in which case you'd go down the next pathway).

You can see all the possibilities laid out in the wondrous graphics on the "Bonuses" tab of the Shiny Squirrels website.  A key to the different symbols and what advantages each bonus grants follows the flowchart.  Nothing is hidden - yet making sense of the array of prizes is part of the game if you want to reach the biggest multipliers and the largest skips.

Even without decoding the mysterious squirrel graphics, it is hard to go wrong  Wink

I'll give you a hint - the more times you play, the more bonuses you'll accumulate.  Combo-bonuses require going down more than one pathway to collect squirrels, shiny things, hearts, sprockets, and stars!  Grin

Also, extra bonus +15% multiplier is still on for the weekend, but won't last.
