Petition: Altering Forum Display Name
by
EconomicOracle
on 02/09/2011, 13:16:38 UTC
The forum system that bitcointalk uses (SMF) has the option for users to edit their display name. But bitcointalk disabled it since it can be used by trolls/scammers to avoid detection. But this is a problem for those who legitimately wish to change their name. For instance:

If you've created a new bitcoin application, you may want to change your username to that application name. But if you create a new account, you can't keep your post count and forum reputation. That'll make people less likely to trust your app. Editing your display name would allow you to carry on with the new name while keeping your reputation.
If you create a new account, you're stuck in the newbie forum until you've spent 4 hours browsing under the new account.

When asking to an admin, he showed his concerns that re-enabling the ability to change your account display name would aid the trolls/scammers again. But I think this can be setup in a way to avoid that. For one, when someone is noticed as a scammer, they already get hit with the forum position of "SCAMMER", and changing their name won't effect that. It will still display next to all their posts. Secondly, altering display name could be enabled for a few days at a time every few months. A notice would show up at the top, telling everyone they have the next 48 hours to change their name if they so wish. Once that time is up, the feature is disabled again. This will give everyone enough time to make the change, while keeping the forums safe from misuse since we only have to worry about it for a few days every few months.

So fellow members, what do you think?

Bruce is the one that got me into bitcoin. So at least he's done some good things in his life. But I hope his petrifying past doesn't hurt the value of bitcoin. He's done his part, but I think sometime soon we'll need a new spokesman.

If you want Bitcoin to get big, create something awesome then tack Bitcoin on as an accessory.
I'm planning to tack Bitcoin as an accessory to something awesome which already exists, would that be acceptable?

PS: I will do it in an awesome way of course Grin

Why isn't the show on OnlyOneTv? As the name implies, this should be the only TV I need to look at for Bitcoin News. But in fact, there is no TV. The TV is missing. This is Very Misleading

skyhigh, the reason I'm saying the issue is minor is that while there has been 50%+ inflation, we've had a 1000%+ inflation of new Bitcoin adopters. There is no reason to be so skeptical as to assume we won't have growth during the next 6 months for example. With the adoption growth we've had, the price is rightfully much higher than it was in the past. How high it's "supposed to be" no one knows, it's obvious it isn't $1 or $30 but something in between.

The price should be around $13-$14 right now to sustain the level of growth we've had so far but clearly we're in a slump with low adoption rates and a ton of bad news. So, basically the main factor to take into account regarding inflation is the adoption rate and the other factor is how much miners believe in Bitcoin or how much they can afford to save.

In the current situation I'd say the price is not going to go below $9, perhaps not even below $10. More bad news is required for another slump like that. The demand for cheap coins at the $9-$11 range is quite decent and many think that price is lowish for selling.

Where it will go from here depends on many things, as I already said in my last post. It might stay here for a while but I don't think so. With all the bad news people will show strong support for good news if they come and if good news come, there will at least be a small rally. With lots of good news we will see a very strong rally. But that's all speculation, we might see quiet stagnation and more occasional bad news and the price will not go up, might even go down.

It's also true that for the functionality of Bitcoin it doesn't matter what the price is, but I personally care about Bitcoin in many different ways, as a miner, as an investor, as a supporter and in the future probably as a merchant as well. For some of my interests the price does matter.
